NIA recovers DVR, number plates from river in presence of suspended Mumbai cop Sachin Waze

MUMBAI: The NIA on Sunday took suspended Mumbai Police officer Sachin Waze to the Mithi river here and recovered a digital video recorder (DVR), CPUs, a laptop and two number plates with the help of divers, a police official said.The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is probing the cases of the recovery of an explosives-laden SUV found outside the south Mumbai residence of industrialist Mukesh Ambani last month and subsequent murder of businessman Mansukh Hiran, the purported owner of that vehicle.
During the search with the help of divers, the NIA also recovered routers, computer cartridges and other materials from the river, the official said.

The NIA team took Waze to the spot in Bandra Kurla Complex around 3 PM, the official said, adding that the search is still underway.
“The NIA is taking the help of professional as well as local divers who know the Mithi river well. More evidence is likely to be recovered,” he said.
It is suspected that Assistant Police Inspector Riyazuddin Kaazi had told the NIA during his interrogation that this evidence was thrown into the Mithi river.
Kaazi, who is close to Waze, was questioned by the NIA multiple times in recent past.
It was Kaazi who allegedly took away the DVR from Waze’s housing society on the latter’s instructions.
The body of Hiran, a resident of Thane, was found in Mumbra creek on March 5.

Sachin Vaze case: NIA officials meet new Mumbai police commissioner

MUMBAI: Two senior officials of the NIA which is probing the case related to the recovery of an explosives-laden vehicle near industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s house met the Mumbai police commissioner here on Friday.Inspector General Anil Shukla and Superintendent of Police Vikram Khalate of the National Investigation Agency met newly-appointed city police commissioner Hemant Nagrale in the afternoon, a police official said.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Milind Bharambe and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Akbar Pathan were also present at the meeting, he said.
The NIA officials spent around 30 minutes at the police commissioner’s office.
It was the first visit by senior officials of the central agency to the commissioner’s office after Nagrale replaced Param Bir Singh two days ago.
The NIA last week arrested suspended Assistant Police Inspector Sachin Waze for his alleged role in parking a Scorpio with gelatin sticks near Ambani’s high-rise residence in south Mumbai on February 25.
It has also questioned several officials of the Crime Intelligence Unit of city police to which Waze was attached and seized a total of five high-end vehicles including two Mercedes cars.

Ambani security scare: Maharashtra home minister meets Sharad Pawar, briefs him about Vaze case

NEW DELHI: Facing criticism over the handling of Mumbai police official Sachin Vaze case, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh Friday met NCP chief Sharad Pawar here and the briefed him about the developments related to it among other issues.The meeting lasted for nearly two hours.
“He was briefed about the last development about Mumbai (the Sachin Vaze case) and also about the developments on the explosives found in a car outside (industrialist) Mukesh Ambani’s house,” Deshmukh, who belongs to the NCP, he told reporters.
He added that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the state Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) are probing the case and the state government is cooperating with the NIA.
“Whoever is guilty will be punished. But till the time the NIA does not complete the probe, I would not be able to comment. Necessary action will be taken by the state government after the NIA completes its probe,” Deshmukh said.
He had come under criticism over the handling of the Vaze case.
Responding to a question whether Deshmukh would be removed, Pawar on Wednesday had said, “This is news to me.”
“We do not believe that (an arrest of Vaze) will impact the state government,” Pawar had added.
Deshmukh said certain industries are keen to set up their units in Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport MIHAN, Nagpur.
He said his meeting with the NCP president was to seek his help from the Commerce and Industry ministry in this regard.
The meeting with Pawar comes two days after the transfer of Param Bir Singh, the Mumbai Police Commissioner.
Earlier, Mumbai Police assistant sub-inspector Vaze was arrested by the (NIA) for allegedly planting a car with gelatin sticks outside Ambani’s residence.
Vaze, 49, credited with eliminating 63 alleged criminals in ‘encounters’, is also facing heat in the murder case of Mansukh Hiran, who was in possession of the Scorpio. Hiran was found dead in a creek in Thane district on March 5.
Vaze, a 1990-batch officer, was earlier suspended in 2004 over his role in the custodial death of a 2002 Ghatkopar blast suspect Khwaja Yunus.
Later, he joined the Shiv Sena. However, he was reinstated last year.

ATS records statements of 25 people in Mansukh Hiren death case

MUMBAI: Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad, probing the death of Mansukh Hiren, has recorded statements of 25 people said an official on Friday.The ATS on Wednesday also confirmed that the diatom test report of the deceased businessman has returned positive.
“Diatom test done at GMC is positive. However, ATS is sending the report to the forensic science lab (FSL) Madhuban, Haryana for confirmation. Meanwhile, the ATS is investigating the case as murder only,” said ATS officials.
Diatom test is an important tool in the diagnosis of death in drowning cases.
Hiren, the owner of the vehicle that was found containing explosives outside the house of Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani, was found dead on March 5 in Thane.
The ATS will also be seeking custody of Assistant Police Inspector Sachin Waze, in connection with the investigation into the Mansukh Hiren death case, as per the top sources.
The squad will oppose the anticipatory bail application of Sachin Waze in Thane Sessions Court today. Waze had moved the sessions court seeking anticipatory bail.
Meanwhile, the NIA on Wednesday confirmed that the person, seen in a CCTV grab walking near Mukesh Ambani’s residence on the night of February 25 when an explosive-laden vehicle was found, was Sachin Waze.
