Allahabad High Court has thrown out the Kanpur police’s case against a notorious fake marksheet gang, ordering the release of all suspects and criticizing the force for shoddy police work. The decision nullifies the remand and arrest documents, marking a humiliating setback for the department in what was touted as a major breakthrough.

It all started with a dramatic raid on February 18 at the Shail Group of Education in Kanpur’s Juhi Gaushala area by Kidwai Nagar police. The operation uncovered a treasure trove of forged papers: over 1,000 marksheets and degrees impersonating 14 universities from nine states, plus UP Secondary Education Board and Aligarh’s Jamia Urdu College. The fakes covered everything from school certificates to professional qualifications like BTech, MTech, pharmacy degrees, and law diplomas.

Authorities nabbed Shailendra Kumar Ojha, the alleged mastermind, along with Nagesh Mani Tripathi, Jogendra, Ashwani Kumar Singh, and Noida resident Vineet, sending them straight to jail. Investigators claimed the network had flourished for 10+ years, with bank accounts showing millions in dubious funds. Clients reportedly paid top dollar for unearned degrees, bypassing exams entirely.

But the SIT’s deeper dive exposed flaws. Asian University’s 284 purported degrees had no trace in their database—roll numbers were fabricated. Two out of three from Sikkim Professional University and one from Himalayan University were also bogus. Verification requests went to Kanpur’s Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University, yet the court found police procedures deficient.

The verdict serves as a wake-up call for precision in cracking education frauds. With suspects freed, trust in anti-fake degree drives takes a hit, prompting calls for reformed investigative protocols to prevent future embarrassments.
