  • “Rust” film armorer says someone may have put bullet in gun

    By Associated Press

LOS ANGELES: The woman in charge of weapons on the movie set where actor Alec Baldwin fatally shot cinematographer Halyna Hutchins said Wednesday night that she had inspected the gun Baldwin shot but doesn’t know how a live bullet ended up inside.

“Who put those in there and why is the central question,” Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the armorer for the movie “Rust” said in a statement issued by one of her lawyers, Jason Bowles of Albuquerque, New Mexico. “Hannah kept guns locked up, including throughout lunch on the day in question (Oct. 21), and she instructed her department to watch the cart containing the guns when she was pulled away for her other duties or on a lunch break.”

The statement goes on to say that “Hannah did everything in her power to ensure a safe set. She inspected the rounds that she loaded into the firearms that day. She always inspected the rounds.”

The statement adds that she inspected the rounds before handing the firearm to assistant director David Halls “by spinning the cylinder and showing him all of the rounds and then handing him the firearm.”

“No one could have anticipated or thought that someone would introduce live rounds into this set,” Gutierrez Reed’s statement said.

The statement also noted that “she did firearms training for the actors as well as Mr. Baldwin, she fought for more training days and she regularly emphasized to never point a firearm at a person.”

On Oct. 29, attorneys for Hannah Gutierrez Reed said she doesn’t know where the live rounds found there came from and blamed producers for unsafe working conditions.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza has said there was “some complacency” in how weapons were handled on the set of “Rust.”

Investigators initially found 500 rounds of ammunition — a mix of blanks, dummy rounds and what appeared to be live rounds. Industry experts have said live rounds should never be on set.

Additional ammunition, a dozen revolvers and a rifle also were seized in the search of a white truck used for storing props including firearms, according to an inventory list filed Friday in court.

  • Alec Baldwin and family celebrate Halloween days after on-set ‘Rust’ shooting

    By ANI

WASHINGTON: Actor Alec Baldwin and his family celebrated Halloween days after the recent on-set ‘Rust’ movie shooting in New Mexico in which the Hollywood star was involved.

Alec’s wife Hilaria Baldwin recently shared pictures of her family enjoying Halloween on Instagram. The photos come after the on-set shooting that left cinematographer Halyna Hutchins dead and injured director Joel Souza.

“Parenting through this has been an intense experience, to say the least. Today, we rallied to give them a holiday. Last min costumes…a little hodge-podge…but they were so happy and that warmed my mama heart. Happy Halloween, from the Baldwinitos. They give us. We send you,” she wrote alongside a series of pictures and videos.

In the photos, the family can be seen posing on the porch of their property smiling at the camera as Alec wears a Viking-style outfit together with a long stringy beard.

In another, Hilaria is seen matching with her two daughters in black witch-like outfits and spider web fascinators.

As per Fox News, the post comes a day after the Baldwins spoke to photographers in Vermont, when Alec said he is cooperating with police and has been speaking to them every day. Alec maintained that he could not speak on the active investigation.

“It’s an active investigation in terms of a woman died, she was my friend,” the actor said.

“We were a very, very well-oiled crew shooting a film together, and then this horrible event happened,” he added.

Alec admitted the fatal shooting on the set is a “one-in-a-trillion event.”

“There are incidental accidents on film sets from time to time, but nothing like this,” he said. “This is a one in a trillion episode. It’s a one in a trillion event.”

The actor further said he is “extremely interested” in limiting the use of firearms onset following the fatal incident.

In the days after the shooting, Hilaria was spotted driving her husband around a posh ski town. At one point, she could even be seen hiding her head from photographers as the duo tried to keep a low profile amid the investigation into Alec’s involvement in the accidental shooting incident.

  • Alec Baldwin speaks publicly for first time after shooting incident, calls it ‘one in a trillion event’

    By ANI

WASHINGTON: Amid the ongoing ‘Rust’ movie shooting investigation, on Saturday, Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin spoke to photographers in Vermont where he said he is cooperating with police and has been speaking to them every day.

According to Fox News, Baldwin maintained that he could not speak on the active investigation. “It’s an active investigation in terms of a woman died, she was my friend,” Baldwin said.

“We were a very, very well-oiled crew shooting a film together, and then this horrible event happened,” he added, admitting that the fatal shooting on the set is a “one in a trillion event.” He said, “There are incidental accidents on film sets from time to time, but nothing like this. This is a one in a trillion episode. It’s a one in a trillion event.”

Baldwin divulged that he is “extremely interested” in limiting the use of firearms on set following the fatal incident.

“But remember, how many bullets have been fired in films and TV shows in the last 75 years. This is America. How many bullets have gone off in movies and on TV sets before? How many, billions in the last 75 years? And nearly all of it without incident. So what has to happen now is, we have to realize that when it does go wrong and it’s this horrible, catastrophic thing, some new measures have to take place,” he said.

The actor continued, Rubber guns, plastic guns, no live — no real armaments on set. That’s not for me to decide. It’s urgent that you understand I’m not an expert in this field, so whatever other people decide is the best way to go in terms of protecting people’s safety on film sets, I’m all in favour of and I will cooperate with that in any way that I can.”

Baldwin and his wife Hilaria had been on the road before making the impromptu press conference. The actor pulled over and agreed to talk to photographers if he could have some space.

The coupe was spotted enjoying drinks at a bar in a small ski town Friday night. Hilaria had wine while Baldwin had a non-alcoholic IPA.

Earlier Friday, Hilaria was seen driving Baldwin around the small town. At one point, she exited the car to pump gas. The author and yoga instructor attempted to shield her face from photographers as the couple tried to maintain a low profile amid the ongoing investigation of the shooting that took place on Baldwin’s ‘Rust’ movie set.

Later, Hilaria was spotted sans Baldwin as she stopped at a local Italian market to pick up groceries. The family’s nanny accompanied her.

Baldwin discharged a gun on the set of ‘Rust’ in New Mexico on October 21, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. Assistant director Dave Halls had told Baldwin that the gun was a “cold gun,” meaning “not hot” or unloaded after armourer Hannah Gutierrez Reed had placed the gun on a cart on set.

Prop master Sarah Zachry also handled the gun before the fatal shooting, according to a search warrant executed by the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office.

As per Fox News, the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department is still investigating the incident and said it was “too early” to comment on potential charges during a press conference on Wednesday. However, Sheriff Adan Mendoza has since referred to the department’s efforts as a “criminal investigation.”

  • Alec Baldwin shooting incident: Man who handed actor loaded gun previously sacked over weapon safety

    By AFP

LOS ANGELES: The assistant director who handed Alec Baldwin the loaded weapon that killed a cinematographer had been sacked from a previous production for gun safety violations, the company said Monday.

The news came as it was reported that crew members had used that same weapon for live-ammunition target practice on the day Halyna Hutchins died.

Hutchins was killed Thursday on the set of low-budget Western “Rust” when Baldwin fired a weapon that assistant director Dave Halls had told him was safe, using the industry lingo “cold gun.”

“Dave Halls was fired from the set of ‘Freedom’s Path’ in 2019 after a crew member incurred a minor and temporary injury when a gun was unexpectedly discharged,” a producer for the as-yet-unreleased movie told AFP.

“Halls was removed from set immediately after the prop gun discharged. Production did not resume filming until Dave was off-site. An incident report was taken and filed at that time.”

Attention has focused on Halls and 24-year-old armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed in the wake of the tragedy on the set near Santa Fe, New Mexico.

An armorer is tasked with supplying and keeping weapons safe on set, ensuring that they are accounted for at all times, and locked away when not in use.

But entertainment trade website The Wrap reported Monday that crew members had been using the weapons just hours before Hutchins was killed.

“A number of crew members had taken prop guns from the New Mexico set of the indie Western — including the gun that killed Hutchins — to go ‘plinking,’ a hobby in which people shoot at beer cans with live ammunition,” the website said, citing an unidentified individual with knowledge of the set.

The producers of “Rust” did not respond to multiple AFP requests for comment.

    – Gun pointed at camera –

The developments came as a narrative of the tragedy emerged from an affidavit submitted by Santa Fe sheriffs as they sought a search warrant.

The document explains how Baldwin was practicing drawing his gun from his holster and pointing it at the camera when the accident happened.

The 63-year-old was “sitting in a pew in a church building setting, and he was practicing a cross draw,” director Joel Souza said in the affidavit, “pointing the revolver towards the camera lens.”

Souza told investigators he was looking over Hutchins’ shoulder “when he heard what sounded like a whip and then loud pop.”

The director said he remembered the 42-year-old Hutchins “grabbing her midsection.”

“Halyna began to stumble backwards and she was assisted to the ground,” the affidavit said. “Joel explained that he was bleeding from his shoulder and he could see blood on Halyna.”

Hutchins was declared dead in hospital a short time later. Souza, 48, was treated by doctors and sent home.

No one has been charged and no arrests have been made.

The incident happened after a lunch break, Souza said in the affidavit, and the director wasn’t sure if the gun had been checked again for safety after the break.

Halls handed one of three prop guns to Baldwin that had been set up on a cart by Gutierrez-Reed, the document says.

“(Halls) yelled ‘Cold Gun,’ indicating the prop gun did not have any live rounds,” it said. “(Halls) did not know live rounds were in the prop-gun.”

    – ‘Negligence and unprofessionalism’ –

The film’s gaffer — or chief electrician — said he held Hutchins in his arms as she was dying, writing an angry Facebook post which alleges the shooting was a result of “negligence and unprofessionalism.”

“There is no way a twenty-four-year-old woman can be a professional with armory,” Serge Svetnoy wrote, adding: “Professionals are the people who have spent years on sets, people who know this job from A to Z.”

“To save a dime sometimes, you hire people who are not fully qualified for the complicated and dangerous job, and you risk the lives of the other people who are close and your lives as well,” he said.

Veteran Hollywood armorer Guillaume Delouche told AFP he was “very surprised” that somebody of Gutierrez-Reed’s age and inexperience “could be a chief armorer on a movie that has to have a lot of gunfighting scenes.”

“Rust” was only her second film as chief armorer. She is the daughter of expert Hollywood armorer Thell Reed, whose credits include “Django Unchained.”

Gutierrez-Reed could not be reached for comment, and has deleted her social media profiles.

Baldwin’s wife Hilaria on Monday took to Instagram to convey her sorrow over the fatal shooting.

“My heart is with Halyna. Her husband. Her son. Their family and loved ones. And my Alec,” Baldwin posted. “It’s said ‘There are no words’ because it’s impossible to express the shock and heartache of such a tragic incident.”

    “Heartbreak. Loss. Support,” she wrote.

WASHINGTON: Actor Jensen Ackles has penned an emotional tribute for cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who was killed by a prop gun held by Alec Baldwin while shooting for ‘Rust’ movie on October 21.

“I’m not even sure where to start. This has been a tragedy of epic proportions that we are all still processing,” Ackles wrote on Instagram.

He recounted moments spent with Hutchins on the set.

“Earlier last week I felt compelled to tell Halyna just how awesome I thought she was. I told her how incredible I thought her camera shots were and just how exciting it was to watch her and her team work. Truly. She laughed and said thank you and gave me a hug. I’ll forever be thankful we had that moment. She had a spunk and passion that infected the entire crew from the top down. She was an inspiration,” he added.

Ackles also paid his condolences to Hutchins’ family members.

“My heart and prayers go out to Halyna’s husband, son and the rest of her family. There just aren’t enough words to express what an immense loss this is. She will be incredibly missed by all of us who knew and admired her,” he wrote.

Ackles also shared that he and his wife, Danneel Ackles, have donated to the AFI memorial scholarship fund in Hutchins’ name, as well as to the GoFundMe campaign organised by ICG Local 600 to support the late star’s husband, Matthew, and their 9-year-old son.

  • Live guns banned on Nathan Fillion-starrer ‘The Rookie’ show post Alec Baldwin shoot incident

    By ANI

LOS ANGELES: After the fatal shooting on the set of Alec Baldwin’s ‘Rust’, the makers of the cop drama ‘The Rookie’ have banned live weapons on their set.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Alexi Hawley announced the new policy in a memo sent to staff on Friday. The policy stated that production would no longer be using quarter or half loads while filming the Nathan Fillion-led drama.

“As of today, it is now policy on The Rookie that all gunfire on set will be Air Soft guns with CG muzzle flashes added in post. There will be no more ‘live’ weapons on the show. The safety of our cast and crew is too important. Any risk is too much risk,” Hawley wrote in the memo.

All these changes have been made on the sets of ‘The Rookie’ after Baldwin accidentally killed his film’s cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured the director Joel Souza with a prop gun on Thursday.

After such a shocking incident, Baldwin took to his Twitter handle to inform everyone that he is fully cooperating with the police investigation.

“There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours. I’m fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred,” he tweeted.

Production on the movie was immediately shut down.

  • Prop gun fired by actor Alec Baldwin kills cinematographer, director injured

    By AFP

LOS ANGELES: US actor Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun that killed a cinematographer and wounded the director on a film set in New Mexico, US law enforcement officers said Thursday.

The incident happened on the set of “Rust” in the southwestern US state, where Baldwin is playing the lead in a 19th-century western.

Halyna Hutchins and Joel Souza “were shot when a prop firearm was discharged by Alec Baldwin,” the sheriff in Santa Fe said in a statement.

Hutchins, 42, was transported to hospital by helicopter but died of her wounds, while Souza, 48, was taken by ambulance and is receiving treatment.

“Mr. Baldwin was interviewed by detectives,” Santa Fe sheriff spokesman Juan Rios told AFP.

“He provided statements and answered their questions. He came in voluntarily and he left the building after he finished his interviews. No charges have been filed and no arrests have been made.”

The Santa Fe New Mexican published pictures of a distraught-looking Baldwin which it said were taken in the parking lot of the set after the tragedy.

The paper said its reporter had seen the actor in tears after he had been quizzed by investigators.

One photograph shows a man, presumed to be Baldwin, doubled over.

A spokesperson from the production told The Hollywood Reporter the “accident” involved the misfire of a prop gun with blanks.

The incident took place at the Bonanza Creek Ranch, a production location near Santa Fe which is popular with Hollywood filmmakers.

Movie sets usually have stringent rules over the use of prop weapons, but accidents have happened.

Most famously, Brandon Lee, the son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, died during filming of “The Crow” after being shot by a gun that was supposed to fire blanks.

Baldwin co-produces the film and stars as Harland Rust, an outlaw whose grandson is convicted of murder, and who goes on the run with him when the boy is sentenced to hang for the crime.

The 63-year-old posted a photograph earlier Thursday on Instagram showing him apparently on set, dressed in a period costume and with fake blood on his shirt.

“Back to in-person at the office. Blimey… it’s exhausting,” he captioned the picture, which went online several hours before the incident.

A joint statement by John Lindley and Rebecca Rhine of the International Cinematographers Guild said news of Hutchins’ death was “devastating”.

“The details are unclear at this moment, but we are working to learn more, and we support a full investigation into this tragic event. This is a terrible loss, and we mourn the passing of a member of our Guild’s family,” the statement, reported by Variety, said.

Baldwin has been on television and in films since the 1980s.

He starred in a number of high profile movies, including in “The Hunt for Red October” and two iterations of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, and has also voiced animated characters in hits like “The Boss Baby”.

He garnered new fans with his long-running portrayal of Donald Trump on “Saturday Night Live”, a character that irritated the former president, but won Baldwin a Primetime Emmy.

“Rust” also stars Jensen Ackles (“Supernaturals”) and Travis Fimmel, best known for playing Ragnar Lothbrok in “Vikings”.

The Bonanza Creek Ranch where Thursday’s incident took place has hosted productions including “Hostiles,” “Cowboys & Aliens,” “3:10 to Yuma,” “Appaloosa” and “Longmire.”
