  • Lalu Prasad being brought to Delhi AIIMS for treatment, says Tejashwi

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: RJD president Lalu Prasad, who was admitted to a Patna hospital with fractures after a fall at his house, is being shifted for better treatment at AIIMS-Delhi where doctors are well-versed with his medical history, his son Tejashwi Yadav said on Wednesday.

Lalu Prasad suffered fractures in three places, including shoulder, after the fall and complications increased as the body is “locked” and he is unable to move much, Yadav said.

The 74-year-old former Bihar chief minister was taken ill on Monday and admitted to a private hospital in Patna, less than 24 hours after he suffered the injuries. Sources said Lalu Prasad was in transit and was expected to be admitted to AIIMS in Delhi later in the night.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday visited Lalu Prasad at the Patna hospital and enquired about his health.

Lalu Prasad’s wife and former chief minister Rabri Devi, who reached Delhi Wednesday, said, “His (Lalu’s) health is slightly better now”.

In a message to RJD workers and Lalu Prasad’s supporters, Rabri Devi said, “Don’t worry, he is being treated and will recover. Everyone should pray for him that he recovers soon.”

Speaking with reporters alongside his mother here, Tejashwi Yadav said, “We are bringing him to AIIMS Delhi as better treatment can be done here with the doctors well-versed with his medical history.”

“He has a fracture in three places after the fall. Complications increased after the fall as the body got locked, he is unable to move much,” the leader of opposition in the Bihar Assembly said.

“Lalu ji will be brought here and a team of doctors will decide in which ward he will be kept. A check-up, all scans and ultrasound will be done,” Yadav said.

Out on bail in fodder scam cases, Prasad had last month obtained permission from the Jharkhand High Court for travelling abroad, preferably Singapore, to get a kidney transplant.

On whether it would be possible to go to Singapore, Tejashwi Yadav said if in 2-4 weeks he can undertake international travel “we may take him to Singapore.”

  • SC allows surgery of ex-CMD of Amrapali Group to be performed at AIIMS within a week

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed surgery of Anil Kumar Sharma, ex-CMD of Amrapali Group of Companies currently lodged in jail, to be conducted at AIIMS for the repair of a “bilateral inguinal hernia” within a week.

A vacation bench of Justices MR Shah and Aniruddha Bose also allowed Sharma’s wife to be present as his attendant on the day of surgery and one day thereafter. However, the bench refused to grant him bail for four weeks as sought by his counsel saying that allegations against him are grave.

“You don’t have a case on merit. There are serious allegations against the petitioner. It is only because of health grounds that the court is granting him indulgence,” the bench told Sharma’s counsel Manoj Singh.

Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj, appearing for Delhi police, informed the bench that as per medical advice, the surgery of the petitioner could be performed after taking all pre-surgery precautions.

The bench said, “We are not going to take any chance. Doctors have advised him surgery; it shall be performed within one week after taking all the pre-surgery precautions.” The bench posted the matter for further hearing after the summer vacation.

On June 6, the top court had directed the production of Sharma before the medical board of AIIMS for examination on his surgery for repair of a “bilateral inguinal hernia”. The AIIMS medical board which was set up in pursuance of the direction of the top court on March 21 had examined Sharma, who is lodged in Mandoli Prison here.

The board had recommended surgery. The top court had said that as per the medical advice he needs to be operated and for that, he needs to be produced before the doctors for examination and fixing of a date for the surgery.

On March 21, the top court had refused to order the transfer and clubbing of over 80 criminal cases lodged by home buyers against directors and other officials of Amrapali group firms, saying it would not “queer the pitch” and make life difficult for a trial judge.

The top court had not agreed to the fervent submission of the counsel of Shiv Priya, one of the jailed officials of the real estate group, that like coal scam cases, the trials in 85 criminal matters, which are of similar nature, can be transferred to one court from seven different courts in the national capital.

The apex court had said that the coal scam cases involved government servants as individual accused as well and moreover, the Prevention of Corruption Act provides for transfer and clubbing and this was not available in other statutes under which the former directors of the private firms are charged.

“Every complainant will have different versions and it will create problems for the court. How does it help the cause of justice? The trial judge concerned will not be able to deliver the judgement. We cannot do that. There has to be a power where we can vest everything in one jurisdiction,” the top court had said.

On the same day, the top court had also dealt with the separate plea of Sharma, seeking relief on medical grounds, and directed the Director, AIIMS, to set up a board of doctors to examine him and give a report to it.

It had asked the AIIMS authorities to apprise the Mandoli prison authority to ensure the presence of Sharma before the medical board for examination on the date fixed. The apex court has been monitoring the cases related to the embattled real estate company after many homebuyers approached alleging malpractices and non-delivery of homes or flats.

Former group directors of Amrapali Anil Kumar Sharma, Shiv Priya, and Ajay Kumar are behind bars on the top court’s order. Chander Prakash Wadhwa, jailed former chief financial officer (CFO) of Amrapali group, and Anil Mittal, statutory auditor of the Amrapali group of companies were also arrested in connection with the case.

The arrested persons have allegedly been instrumental in creating a large number of bogus companies for diversion of funds of home buyers by employing persons known to them as directors or appointing them to key management posts in those companies.

The apex court in its July 23, 2019, verdict had cracked the whip on errant builders for breaching the trust reposed by home buyers and ordered the cancellation of the registration of the Amrapali Group under real estate law RERA and ousted it from prime properties in the NCR by nixing the land leases.

The apex court had directed a probe by the Enforcement Directorate into alleged money laundering by realtors, providing relief to over 42,000 home buyers of Amrapali Group with the verdict. Besides ED, the Economic Offence Wing (EoW) of Delhi Police and SFIO has also been investigating various cases lodged against the former officials of the real estate group.

The top court, which is trying to bring in funds for the stalled projects, had then directed the state-run NBCC to complete the stalled projects of the Amrapali Group.

  • Fresh charges filed against RJD supremo Lalu Prasad in Bihar court

    Express News Service

PATNA: Trouble for Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad seems to be far from over. On Wednesday, charges were framed against him in Bihar’s Hajipur court in connection with a case related to violation of election commission’s model code of conduct and inflammatory remarks at a public meeting.

Lalu Prasad is currently undergoing treatment at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, after being released on bail from Ranchi high court in connection with the Doranda district treasury excess withdrawal case, an off shoot of multi-crore animal husbandry scam in undivided Bihar. Lalu is a named accused in a case lodged with Ganga Bridge police station in Vaishali district.

The case relates to the violation of the model code of conduct and instigating people at a public meeting during assembly polls at Terasia village near Hajipur on September 27, 2015. The case was lodged on the written complaint of then circle officer Niranjan Kumar, who was deployed at the venue of the public meeting as a magistrate. On October 2, 2015, the investigating officer submitted the chargesheet in the case. The court took cognisance on February 11, 2019.

On April 18 this year, Lalu was deposed before the court through a video conferencing system. Though Lalu denied the charges levelled against him, charges were framed by the court on Wednesday. “Now the trial will start in the case,” an assistant public prosecutor said.

Meanwhile, RJD spokesperson Chitranjan Gagan said that Lalu Prasad is likely to visit Patna on April 30. He will be released from AIIMS-Delhi on Thursday and leave for Patna after staying at his eldest daughter Misa Bharti’s Delhi residence for a couple of days.

  • Equal distribution of COVID vaccines is need of the hour: AIIMS director Randeep Guleria

    By Express News Service

NEW DELHI:  All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Director Randeep Guleria on Monday called for an equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines across the globe, saying “nobody is safe until everyone is safe”. He highlighted that if it does not happen, coronavirus will continue to mutate.

Speaking at the inaugural session of a two-day lecture series organised by the JNU’s Centre for Canadian, US, and Latin American Studies, Guleria lauded the country’s vaccination programme. “India has done remarkably well as far as our vaccine programme is concerned… It is something that we should be proud of. Almost 97 per cent of Indians aged 18 and above have received the first dose of vaccine. This is a remarkable achievement,” he said.

He added, “It is important that there should be an equitable distribution of vaccines all around the world. No one is safe unless everyone is safe.” The two-day lecture series on ‘COVID-19 and the engaged democracies with special reference to Canada and India’ has been funded by Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute (SICI).

The event was also attended by JNU Vice Chancellor Santishree D Pandit and SICI Director Prachi Kaul. Addressing the event, the AIIMS director noted that the virus, which has raged on for 26 months and claimed 6 million lives worldwide, will gradually become an endemic.

He also pointed out that the pandemic has impacted every sphere of life – healthcare, economy, education, tourism among others. “After the first COVID-19 case, it has been a roller coaster ride.  We know sooner or later that this pandemic will end,” he said.

Asserting that the World Health Organisation has deemed vaccine hesitancy as one of the top ten global health threats, Guleria said that data from various studies shows that compared to the western countries, there is not much vaccine hesitancy in India.

  • ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’ moment: Assam tea seller clearing NEET, securing AIIMS seat turns out to be fake

    Express News Service

GUWAHATI: After Assam tea seller Rahul Kumar Das had secured a berth in AIIMS, Delhi, by cracking NEET in his first attempt recently, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said his government would take care of his educational expenses while a minister visited his house and felicitated him.

However, it has now emerged that the 24-year-old from Bajali district had doctored his admit card. The district police refused to comment about it stating no complaint was received.

A group of students from the state, who had appeared for NEET, first suspected Rahul’s claims. Following scrutiny by multiple sources, it came to light that he had used the records of a student from Haryana.

His admit card reflected his Roll No for NEET as 2303001114. However, during verification, it emerged that it was that of a candidate from Haryana who was ranked AIR 11656.

Rahul lost his father a few years ago and his mother ran a tea-pan shop to eke out a living. When news broke that he faked his results, the landowner allegedly asked his mother to vacate the place. Rahul, his mother, and his younger brother are now allegedly absconding.

A final year MBBS student in Assam said many of his junior medicos from different colleges had tagged him in social media posts doubting Rahul’s success.

Soon, they created a WhatsApp group and began research. Two days ago, they managed to get hold of Rahul’s mark sheet. It cleared all doubts.

“This idiotic behaviour must be investigated and the person must be dealt with strongly,” the final year MBBS student insisted, adding, “If it leads to some psychiatric disturbances, being responsible for the same, we are ready to bear his treatment (cost) ourselves.”

  • Third Covid wave of magnitude comparable to first two unlikely to hit India: Guleria

On the need for a booster dose, he said there is no surge in cases as such at the moment which suggests that vaccines are still protecting against coronavirus.

  • Massive COVID wave unlikely if large population already infected, says AIIMS Doctor

    By ANI

DELHI: Responding to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) warning of a new COVID-19 wave, AIIMS Doctor and Epidemiologist Dr Sanjay K Rai on Friday said that it is unlikely if a large population has already been already infected by the virus.

The WHO had earlier warned of a massive COVID-19 wave in Europe and Central Asia. It also said that over 5,00,000 deaths (combined) are likely in this region by February 2022.

“When large populations get infected, massive waves of the virus are unlikely. Natural infections lead to natural immunity which leads to a decline in the number of cases. Vaccinations also reduce disease severity and deaths. It will happen in Russia and Central Asia. A wave of infections is going on there, but this will reduce by February. This happened everywhere, including in India. A large amount of the population was infected, then cases started to decline rapidly. Whenever the cases rise rapidly, they decline quickly too,” he said.

He, however, said it was likely that the regions could touch the mark of 5,00,000 deaths by February and even vaccinations would not bring the rising deaths to a sudden halt.

He added that WHO was losing its credibility on the global stage.

“It has been giving controversial statements. It has not been able to figure out the origins of COVID-19. It took them over 1.5 years to understand that natural infections are giving protection to the people but they are still not giving much weightage to it,” he said.

Amid increasing COVID-19 cases in Europe and Central Asia, WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Thursday warned of rising cases and deaths. According to the WHO, every single country in Europe and Central Asia is facing a real threat of COVID-19 resurgence or is already fighting it.

  • Stroke likely to become more severe in Covid-infected people: AIIMS doctors

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Stroke is likely to become more severe in coronavirus-infected people and their chances of recovery is almost half than those stroke patients not affected by COVID-19, doctors at AIIMS said on Friday.

Also, the patients who have stroke associated with COVID-19 have a higher mortality and morbidity, Dr Rohit Bhatia, Professor, Department of Neurology at AIIMS, said. World Stroke Day is observed on October 29.

The premier medical institute has conducted multi-centric studies on the outcomes of stroke before and during the pandemic and the clinical profile and outcome of stroke in patients without COVID-19.

“Generally a good recovery is called when a patient of stroke becomes independent in daily activities within three months of the stroke. COVID-19-related strokes are likely to be more severe and also associated with relatively poorer outcomes. However, it is still not clear whether Covid is causative or associated with the occurrence of stroke,” he said.

AIIMS collaborated with 17 other hospitals across the country to study the changes in stroke treatment pathway in 2,500 patients before and during the pandemic.

The study outcomes suggested that there were some treatment delays and mild increase in mortality in the patients during the pandemic period.

Endovascular Thrombectomy, an important procedure among patients with Ischemic stroke due to large vessel occlusion, reduced significantly during the pandemic. Several other procedures were also delayed, Bhatia said.

“COVID-19 is known to manifest and involve several other organs in the illness. The brain is among them. There is no definitive evidence to say that Covid can directly cause stroke, though it may add to the risk of clot formation,” said Dr M V Padma Srivastava, chief of Neurosciences Centre at AIIMS.
