Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lauded Israel’s naval forces on Thursday for their interception of an aid flotilla en route to Gaza. Netanyahu praised the navy’s actions, stating that the soldiers and commanders executed their mission professionally and efficiently. He emphasized that their actions prevented numerous vessels from entering the conflict zone and countered attempts to delegitimize Israel. The Global Samud Flotilla, comprising 45 vessels and carrying various individuals, including Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, began its journey last month with the intention of reaching Gaza. The Israeli Navy had been intercepting the vessels since Wednesday, warning activists against entering the designated waters. Israel’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that the flotilla’s attempts to enter the combat zone and breach the naval blockade had been thwarted. The ministry stated that one final vessel was still at a distance and would also be prevented from entering. According to Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis, 39 of the 45 ships were intercepted and were headed towards Ashdod. Gerapetritis reported that all passengers were in good health and that no violence was used. Greek organizers of the flotilla announced that 11 Greek citizens on board had initiated a hunger strike to protest their detention by Israeli authorities. Israel indicated that the activists would be deported to Europe, without specifying the destination country. The Israeli Foreign Minister shared on ‘X’ that the Hamas-Sumud passengers were safely and peacefully making their way to Israel for deportation to Europe, along with pictures of Greta Thunberg and other activists. Earlier, Israeli forces had intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla, detaining several activists, including Greta Thunberg. The Israeli Foreign Ministry released a video showing an Israeli soldier returning Thunberg’s belongings and confirmed that she and the other activists were safe and healthy. Out of 47 ships, Israeli troops had boarded six ships in the convoy and detained over 150 activists from 37 different countries. The ministry posted a video stating that the passengers were being transferred to an Israeli port and that Greta and her companions were safe.

China has extended a helping hand to Pakistan, sending aid to flood-affected areas. According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) of Pakistan, the first consignment of relief supplies from the Chinese government arrived on Sunday. Two Chinese relief planes landed in Rawalpindi, a city in eastern Pakistan, carrying 300 tents and 9,000 blankets. The NDMA stated that this demonstrates China’s unwavering solidarity with Pakistan during a difficult time. The Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan and SAFRON, Amir Muqam, expressed sincere gratitude to the Chinese government and people, stating that the aid would provide much-needed relief to thousands of flood-affected families. Beijing had announced on Friday that it would provide $14 million (approximately ₹117.6 crore) in relief material to Pakistan following the devastating monsoon rains and floods. According to United Nations Secretary-General’s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, the UN also released $5 million from its Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to support Pakistan’s flood relief efforts this month. Minister Amir Muqam noted that the floods in Pakistan, caused by heavy rainfall since June, have resulted in hundreds of deaths and widespread damage to infrastructure, homes, and crops. The relief material from China will play a crucial role in rescue operations. Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan, Jiang Zaidong, said that China’s assistance shows that we all share a common future and should support each other in times of hardship. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif instructed officials on Saturday to prepare a report on the damage caused by the recent monsoon floods within a week. Since the beginning of June, the monsoon season has claimed the lives of over 1,000 people in Pakistan. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) experienced the highest number of deaths, with over 500 fatalities, while floods caused by heavy rainfall in Punjab at the end of August claimed over 300 lives. More than 4,700 villages in Punjab were submerged, affecting 4.7 million people. The province conducted its largest rescue operation to date, rescuing 2.6 million people and 2.1 million animals. Shehbaz Sharif said that the assessment of the damage to crops and infrastructure should be completed soon so that proper planning can be done for relief and rehabilitation. He instructed the officials to present a complete report within a week. Pakistan and China have been close friends since the establishment of diplomatic relations in May 1951. The two countries share strong relations and have supported each other on international platforms for decades. China is Pakistan’s largest arms supplier and its largest trading partner. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), part of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), is the largest economic project between the two countries. It includes roads, railways, energy projects, and the Gwadar Port. China always helps Pakistan in natural disasters (such as floods and earthquakes).

Punjab is currently grappling with the devastating aftermath of severe flooding, leaving millions homeless, decimating crops, and crippling industries. Amidst this crisis, many in Punjab anticipated a substantial relief package…

Punjab is currently grappling with the devastating aftermath of severe flooding, leaving millions homeless, decimating crops, and crippling industries. Amidst this crisis, many in Punjab anticipated a substantial relief package from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, during his visit to Gurdaspur, the announced aid amounted to only ₹1,600 crores. Further fueling discontent, Modi’s remark, “Don’t you understand Hindi?” was perceived as insensitive and insulting to the Punjabi language and its people.

When Disaster Management Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian expressed that the aid was insufficient, Modi responded with laughter and reiterated the ₹1,600 crore figure. Mundian countered, stating he understood Hindi but the funds were inadequate. This exchange was viewed as indicative of the central government’s dismissive attitude towards Punjab’s crisis. The incident drew strong reactions, with AAP’s Punjab State President and Cabinet Minister Aman Arora labeling the aid a cruel joke, especially considering the estimated losses exceeding ₹20,000 crores. Arora also highlighted the Centre’s alleged withholding of ₹60,000 crore in funds, demanding immediate release. He criticized the Prime Minister’s visit as a public relations exercise.

Water Resources Minister Barinder Goyal termed the relief package a “big joke,” while Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema noted the belated announcement after 30 days and deemed the aid as insignificant. Even BJP leader Ravneet Bittu acknowledged the insensitivity of Modi’s remark regarding the Punjabi language, although he later attempted to clarify his statement. The AAP government has reiterated its call for a comprehensive relief package to address the extensive damage and for the immediate disbursement of the withheld funds. The AAP government asserted its commitment to supporting flood-affected families, boosting farmers’ morale, and upholding the pride of Punjab, regardless of the central government’s actions.

Afghanistan continues to grapple with the impact of frequent earthquakes. Another tremor was felt on Friday night, registering a magnitude of 5.0 on the Richter scale. This recent event marks the third significant earthquake in a short period, causing widespread panic among the population. Despite the intensity, there are no immediate reports of major damage or casualties.

This follows a devastating earthquake on Sunday, August 31st, which ravaged mountainous villages and led to the recovery of hundreds more bodies, bringing the death toll to over 2,200. The initial 6.0 magnitude quake triggered the collapse of homes and buried residents under rubble. The majority of casualties occurred in Kunar province, where residents typically reside in wooden and mud-brick houses along river valleys.

An assessment released by the Islamic Relief charity on Thursday indicated that approximately 98% of the buildings in the province were either damaged or destroyed. Aid agencies have emphasized the critical need for personnel and supplies to care for the survivors in the affected regions. One resident, Muhammad Israel, reported that the earthquake caused landslides, destroying his home, livestock, and belongings in Kunar. He described the harrowing experience of barely managing to extract his children from the area, noting that aftershocks continue, making it impossible to remain there.

On Thursday evening, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck Jalalabad in Nangarhar province, located south of the hardest-hit Kunar province. Fortunately, no immediate casualties or damage were reported. Israelis, who are residing in a UN medical camp in Nurghal, one of the most affected districts in Kunar, stated that the conditions are dire, with a lack of shelter and the need to live in the open. The initial estimates of the death toll were around 1,400 people. Taliban spokesperson Hamdullah Fitrat announced on Thursday that the death toll had risen to 2,205, with search and rescue operations still ongoing. Fitrat added that tents have been provided for people and that primary medical and emergency supplies are being distributed. Difficult terrain is hindering relief efforts. Taliban officials have deployed helicopters to assist survivors and transported army commandos via air.

Aid workers have reported that they are forced to walk for hours to reach villages that have been cut off due to landslides and rockfalls. A reduction in funding is also impacting relief efforts. The Norwegian Refugee Council stated that they have fewer than 450 staff in Afghanistan, compared to 1,100 staff in 2023 during the last major earthquake. The council has only one warehouse remaining and no emergency stock. Maysam Shafi, the council’s communications and advocacy advisor in Afghanistan, said that they would need to purchase supplies after receiving funding, which could take weeks, while people need them immediately. Shafi also mentioned that they have only $100,000 available for emergency response efforts, resulting in an immediate funding gap of $1.9 million.

Dr. Shamshair Khan, who is caring for the injured at the UN camp in Nurghal, noted that the sight of others’ suffering has worsened their condition. He stated that there is a lack of adequate medication and services, with people requiring more medicine and tents. They need food and clean water. These people are suffering greatly. The Qatari Minister of State for International Cooperation, Mariam bint Ali bin Nasser Al Misnad, arrived in Kabul on Wednesday to oversee the delivery of aid to the earthquake victims.

She is the first female minister to visit Afghanistan on a humanitarian mission since the Taliban came to power in 2021, and also the first high-ranking foreign official to visit after the earthquake. Aid organizations are describing this latest disaster as a crisis within a crisis. Afghanistan was already struggling with drought, a weakened economy, and the recent return of almost 2 million Afghans from neighboring countries.

A 6-magnitude earthquake struck Jalalabad, Afghanistan, on Sunday night, resulting in the deaths of over 800 people and injuries to more than 2,500. Hospitals are grappling with a shortage of doctors and essential resources. Rescue efforts for those trapped in the rubble are also hampered. The Taliban administration has appealed to the international community for assistance in providing medical care and conducting rescue operations.

Kunar province has been hit the hardest by the earthquake. Sadiqullah, a resident, recounted that a loud explosion woke him up. He managed to save three children, but the roof of their house collapsed, preventing him from reaching the rest of his family. He was trapped in the debris for four hours. His wife and two sons died, and his father was injured.

Another resident of Kunar, Mohammadi, described a night filled with fear and anxiety, anticipating aftershocks. He emphasized the urgent need for ambulances, doctors, and comprehensive aid to rescue survivors and recover the deceased. At the Nangarhar hospital, Yama Bariz reported that many patients are still in shock. The hospital has admitted 460 victims, but is struggling with a severe shortage of resources.

The Ganga River in Katihar, Bihar, is overflowing. Heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding have submerged the entire area. Medinipur village in the Raj Baghar Panchayat of the Manihari subdivision is currently bearing the brunt of the flood’s devastation. The situation is so dire that people are forced to spend their nights on makeshift rubber tube boats. All the houses in the village have been swallowed by the Ganga.

Villagers have taken shelter on the upper floors of a submerged school. Sixteen other surrounding panchayats have also been inundated by the Ganga’s waters. There is only one boat available for entering and exiting the village, which hundreds of people are using in turns. The people are pleading for help from the government, but so far, no assistance has been received.

At least 34 Palestinians were killed in multiple Israeli strikes across Gaza on Monday, according to reports. The attacks occurred shortly after Israel announced a temporary pause in military operations to facilitate aid delivery, a move aimed at easing the severe humanitarian crisis in the region. While Israel had eased some restrictions on aid, including airdrops, the ongoing violence and limited access continue to exacerbate the critical shortages of food and medicine. The easing of restrictions followed a period where Israel had severely limited the entry of essential supplies into Gaza. Despite the recent measures, aid agencies report that the assistance is insufficient, and the population continues to struggle with severe hunger. Tragically, some Palestinians have risked their lives to access aid, with reports of deaths near aid distribution sites. The Health Ministry in Gaza, which is regarded as a reliable source for casualty figures, reports a devastating toll of over 59,800 Palestinian deaths during the conflict, with women and children comprising a significant portion of the fatalities.
