Afghanistan’s disappointing T20 World Cup 2026 campaign, failing to reach Super 8, marked the end of Jonathan Trott’s successful four-year stint as head coach. The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has kicked off the hunt for a new leader, aiming to appoint one before the upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka.

A unique stipulation accompanies the job: the new coach and staff must work from Afghanistan during off-seasons. This move, according to ACB CEO Naseeb Khan, ensures direct involvement with domestic talent and targeted improvements for the national squad.

“The contract specifies Afghanistan as their base,” Khan explained. “Off-season focus will be on domestic oversight and fixing team vulnerabilities.”

Shortlisting includes two South Africans and one Asian candidate, all interviewed. Final decision looms ahead of the Sri Lanka clash, signaling fresh beginnings.

Since taking charge in 2022, Trott elevated Afghanistan’s global standing. Memorable wins: beating Pakistan, England, Sri Lanka in ODI WC 2023; stunning Australia, New Zealand in T20 WC 2024 en route to semis. His legacy spans Tests, ODIs, and T20s, leaving an indelible mark.
