Tesla has introduced more affordable versions of its popular Model Y and Model 3 electric vehicles, aiming to reignite slowing sales figures. The new “Standard” trims offer a starting range of approximately 517 kilometers (321 miles) on a single charge. This strategic move comes at a critical time for the company, as it navigates an increasingly competitive electric vehicle landscape and faces challenges such as an aging product lineup and consumer boycotts. The updated models, priced under $40,000 for the Model Y and under $37,000 for the Model 3, feature a more minimalist interior, reduced audio systems, and less premium materials compared to their higher-end counterparts. Despite the price adjustments, the vehicles are still significantly above Tesla’s long-held promise of a $25,000 electric car. Investors showed a tepid reaction, with Tesla’s stock experiencing a notable decline following the announcement, indicating expectations that these new iterations may not significantly alter the company’s market trajectory.

Tesla has introduced more affordable versions of its popular Model Y and Model 3 electric vehicles, aiming to invigorate declining sales figures. The new Model Y Standard and Model 3…

Tesla has introduced more affordable versions of its popular Model Y and Model 3 electric vehicles, aiming to invigorate declining sales figures. The new Model Y Standard and Model 3 Standard boast an estimated driving range of 517 kilometers (321 miles). The Model Y Standard is priced just below $40,000, featuring a simplified interior to achieve its lower cost. This strategic move comes at a challenging time for Tesla, as it grapples with an aging product lineup, intensified competition from global electric vehicle manufacturers, and consumer boycotts linked to its CEO. The market’s lukewarm reception suggests these new models may not deliver the significant sales rebound investors are seeking. The company also unveiled a cheaper Model 3 variant, available for under $37,000, with potential to drop below $35,000 for New York residents utilizing state rebates. While Tesla has long spoken of a sub-$25,000 vehicle, these ‘standard’ models are priced considerably higher. Their launch also coincides with consumer hesitations due to the recent expiration of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit. Tesla’s stock experienced a notable decline following the announcement. The updated Model Y offers a reduced range of 321 miles, fewer audio components, and a fabric interior instead of microsuede. It also omits the panoramic glass roof and a rear-seat touchscreen. In the competitive $40,000 EV segment, it faces rivals like the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Chevrolet Equinox EV, and Hyundai Ioniq 5. Similarly, the new Model 3 includes fewer features, such as reduced driving range and ambient lighting.

The Indian e-scooter market is experiencing rapid growth, with numerous new models emerging. Honda, a well-established brand in India, is entering the electric scooter segment with the Activa E, aiming…

The Indian e-scooter market is experiencing rapid growth, with numerous new models emerging. Honda, a well-established brand in India, is entering the electric scooter segment with the Activa E, aiming to leverage its strong reputation in the conventional two-wheeler market. However, it faces significant competition from the TVS iQube, OLA’s electric offerings, and the Bajaj Chetak EV.

To gain a competitive edge, Honda plans to launch its e-scooters with a battery exchange network, addressing range anxiety concerns. Early results from the pilot program have been positive, leading Honda to introduce more affordable Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) rental plans alongside the Activa E.

These new plans are designed to make the scooter more appealing, particularly to budget-conscious urban commuters.

Here’s a breakdown of the BaaS plans:

| BaaS plans | Charges above Activa-e |
|—|—|
| Lite Plan | Rs 676 |
| Basic Plan | Rs 1,999 |
| Advance Plan | Rs 3,599 |

A major drawback of the Activa E is its reliance on battery swapping; it cannot be charged via a standard wall socket. Initially, the BaaS plan started at ₹1,999 for the Basic Plan (up to 35 kWh per month) and ₹3,599 for the Advanced Plan (up to 82 kWh per month).

Based on customer feedback, Honda has now introduced a new Lite Plan, priced at ₹678 for up to 20 kWh per month. The cost of these battery rental plans is added to the scooter’s price. Battery swapping stations will be operated and managed by Honda Power Pack Energy India.

A significant disadvantage is the lack of usable boot space due to the battery swapping mechanism. The scooter features a 1.5 kWh removable battery pack and a mid-mounted motor, providing a claimed range of approximately 102 km on a full charge.

**Activa E vs. TVS I-QUBE vs. Bajaj Chetak Comparison:**

| Comparison | Honda Activa-E | TVS I-Qube | Bajaj Chetak | Suzuki e-Access |
|—|—|—|—|—|
| Motor Capacity | 6KW Axle Mounted Wheel Side PMSM Motor | 3KW BLDC Motor | 3.5 kwh Motor | Swingarm Mounted 4.1 KW |
| Battery Capacity | 3KWH, Two Swap able 1.5KWH batteries | The vehicle is available with 3 battery Packs, 2.2 KWH,AND 3.4KWH | The Vehicle has a battery capacity of 2.88 KWH To 3.5 KWH | 3.07 KWH LFP battery |
| Range | 102km/ Per Charge | 75km/100km/ Per charge | 123km to 153km | 95 Km |
| Features | DRL’s, Bluetooth Connectivity, Keyless Ignition | DRLs, Fast Charging, Bluetooth, LED Tail Light | Fast Charging, Bluetooth, Led Tail Light | Fast Charging, Bluetooth, Led Tail Light |
| Prices | Estimated Price- 1,17,000 | 89,999- 1,85,373 | 95,998 to 1,27,243 | 1,00,000 to 1,20,000 |

While the Honda Activa-E may appear more expensive, the price includes a battery exchange program. For those prioritizing affordability, the Bajaj Chetak or TVS I-Qube may be better options.
