Meanwhile, ABVP leaders have raised objections over the contents of Farhat Khan’s other book titled “Women and Criminal Law.”

He claimed the book contained objectionable comments on women from the Hindu community and topics related to the Mahabharata character Draupadi and polyandry, the devadasi tradition and religious beliefs.

  • JNU clash: Delhi Police register two separate FIRs

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Police have registered two separate FIRs in connection with a scuffle that broke out between two groups of students on the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus, officials said on Friday.

Police had said that two students were injured in Thursday’s clash, while university sources claimed only one student suffered injuries.

The scuffle near the Narmada Hostel was a fallout of events that unfolded at a birthday party on Wednesday, the sources said earlier.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest) Manoj C said, “On the complaint of JNU student Nishant Nagar, a case under sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered.”

He further added that on the complaint of another JNU student Kartik, a second FIR under similar sections has been registered in Vasant Kunj North police station and further investigation is underway.

A few purported video clips were circulated on social media that showed some students with sticks running on the campus.

In one of the videos, masked students were seen with sticks. One of the students was wearing a JNU sweatshirt. Police said they will verify the authenticity of the videos circulating on social media.

Both university sources and the police had said no political groups were involved in the fight.

In recent years, the university has witnessed several instances of violence involving Left-affiliated student outfits and the RSS-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

In April this year, two groups of students clashed at the Kaveri Hostel allegedly over the serving of non-vegetarian food in the mess on Ram Navami.

On January 5, 2020, a mob of masked men stormed the campus and targeted students in three hostels.

At least 28 people, including JNU Students’ Union president Aishe Ghosh, were injured as chaos reigned on the campus for nearly two hours.

  • JNU violence: AISA-affiliated students protest near Delhi Police headquarters

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Scores of JNU students affiliated to the All India Students Association staged a protest near Delhi Police headquarters here on Monday and demanded the arrest of ABVP activists for their alleged role in the violence at the university.

Two groups had clashed at the Jawaharlal Nehru University’s Kaveri Hostel here on Sunday allegedly over serving of non-vegetarian food in the mess on Ram Navami, with the police saying they have received 20 Medicolegal cases of students who were injured in the incident.

Members of other left-affiliated student bodies also accused the ABVP of inflicting violence and imposing their food choices on students.

AISA activists at the protest site alleged that some students were detained and taken to the Tughlaq Road police station.

A senior police officer also denied allegations of any type of manhandling by the personnel during the protest.

“We have detained them because they were trying to protest near the police headquarters. They were detained before they could reach the spot and taken to Tughlaq Road police station. Another group of protesters who came later have also been detained and taken to Madhir Marg police station. Around 30 students have been detained so far and would be released later,” the officer added.

AISA president Sai Balaji said, “Our protest is going to continue. People who attacked the students are repeat offenders and so is the JNU administration.

“Protest at PHQ (police headquarters) was to ensure accountability of the Delhi Police and ensure that justice happens. There will be more protests today. Women protesters were manhandled and their clothes were pulled by male security personnel. Several protesters have also got injured. We have been detained inside the Tughlaq Road Police Station,” AISA activist Neha said.

The Delhi Police on Monday registered an FIR against unknown ABVP students based on the complaint received from a group of students in connection with a clash in JNU.

Meanwhile, at a press conference outside the university, Anagha Pradeep, JNUSU councillor, said, “In this university, the ABVP and the RSS orchestrated a big incident again and unleashed violence in the name of food. All the 16 hostels in JNU serve both non-vegetarian and vegetarian food.”

Recalling the sequence of events on Sunday, she said when the vendor came to supply meat to Kaveri Hostel, the ABVP activists tried to attack him and heckle him.

“He was told that that he won’t be spared and asked to leave the campus. They said non-vegetarian food will not be prepared here. The mess committee members, who were present there, were also attacked and heckled,” she alleged.

After that, students went to the warden to ask him to ensure that Kaveri Hostel residents are provided food since sufficient amount had not been prepared owing to the diktat on non-vegetarian food.

While students were talking to the warden, ABVP activists arrived there and attacked several students, she alleged. “Water coolers were thrown at the students. Guards and the warden were not doing anything. Phones of some of the students, who were making videos, were snatched and broken by the ABVP members.”

“As soon as we stepped out of the mess, they started hurling stones. They used wipers, flower pots and whatever they could lay their hands on. Many students sustained injuries. They are spreading lies that we thrashed them. Nothing of that sort happened. We have evidences to prove their claims wrong,” Pradeep said.

All this happened in front of Delhi Police and yet there have been no arrests in the matter, she said.

Apeksha, another student councillor, said, it is a known fact that every Sunday, non-vegetarian food is prepared in every hostel.

Barring Kaveri Hostel, non-vegetarian food was prepared in every other hostel of JNU on Sunday, Apeksha said.

“Nobody in the hostels had any issues but the ABVP activists said they are organising a puja on the occasion of Ram Navami and won’t allow meat to be served.

“Initially, the ABVP members kicked and punched the students and also hurled sexist abuses and rape threats. Two guards were also seriously injured. One of the guards was hit with a tubelight,” she said.

Apeksha said she called the police to inform them about the violence. “The police said they were on the other side of the gate but didn’t stop the violence. From 4 pm, students had been continuously calling the police to inform them about the situation but there was no response,” she added.

The police, however, denied the allegations. A senior police officer saying the first call was received at around 8.15 pm following which the teams rushed to the spot. “The situation was brought under control after the police teams arrived,” he said.

Apeksha also alleged that ABVP activists hurled “sexual abuses” at women in front of police.

“When we stepped out of Kaveri Hostel, at least four police vans were stationed and ight to 10 personnel were standing.

The attackers came and hurled sexual abuses at us and also threatened us but the police did nothing ,” she said.

She said after left-affiliated bodies took out a march and urged the police to take action on complaints filed against ABVP since 2019, assurance was given they will be investigated.

“There are at least 15 to 20 members of ABVP who are repeat offenders,” Apeksha said, alleging that in such cases, neither the university administration takes any action nor the police.

“Condemn the attempt to intentionally disrupt peaceful campus atmosphere by ABVP hoodlums. The goons continue to riot in and around Kaveri hostel, breaking bikes, and beating hostellers and students. Police have arrived at the spot but are refusing to do anything despite students’ request to intervene,” claimed the student union.

On the other hand, the ABVP claimed that ‘Left’ students had tried to disrupt a Ram Navami pooja being conducted in the hostel in the late afternoon.

“On the auspicious occasion of Ram Navami, residents of Kaveri Hostel, JNU had organised a pooja to celebrate the event. This event was supposed to be joined by a large number of common students of JNU. It is also noteworthy that Ramzan is being celebrated in the hostel very peacefully and simultaneously. This pooja was supposed to start at 3.30, but due to the ruckus created by leftists, it could only start at 5 pm. This pooja was joined by a large number of common students of JNU. The Leftists came to object, obstruct and prevent the pooja from happening. Meanwhile, the DCP Southwest Manoj C said the situation is peaceful and appropriate actions will be taken if the complaint of filed.

“Presently the situation is peaceful, both the student parties are protesting peacefully. Appropriate action will be taken based on the complaint,” he added.

MUMBAI: From his stint as a student leader in the RSS-affiliate ABVP to becoming a key member of the BJP’s coordination panel for the 12th and 13th Lok Sabha elections to working as a minister in the previous Maharashtra government in 2014, Vinod Tawde has always been an organisation man for the saffron party.

The senior BJP leader, believed to be a political rival of former Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, was elevated to the post of general secretary of BJP on Sunday ahead of assembly elections in five states, including politically crucial Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Uttarakhand.

Tawde, who was the national secretary of the BJP, was elevated to the post of general secretary to fill up a vacancy created after Bhupender Yadav became Union minister.

Tawde began his political career as a student leader in the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

He went on to serve as the All India general secretary of ABVP.

He had also worked as the BJP organising secretary, north Maharashtra, before becoming the state BJP general secretary.

  • Covaxin recipient students being considered as unvaccinated by foreign varsities: ABVP tells Vardhan

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: The RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has submitted a memorandum to Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan drawing his attention to the fact that those students who have been inoculated with Covaxin are being treated as ‘unvaccinated’ by foreign universities.

They also drew his attention towards those students below the age of 18 years who have got admission in foreign varsities but do not fall within the vaccination bracket.

Many countries, including the US and European countries, are treating Indian students vaccinated with Covaxin as ‘unvaccinated’, the memorandum said.

“Such treatment is a source of grave inconvenience and academic loss to the Indian students,” it said. Apart from this, many higher secondary students apply for admissions to foreign universities.

Students aged below 18 who have passed SAT for admissions to American or British Universities have not yet been covered under the vaccination policy, which makes them prone to academic loss, it added.

ABVP National Secretary Sushri Nidhi Tripathi said, “Looking at the uncertainty and the gravity of the situation, the ABVP has requested the Union minister of Health and Family Welfare to look into and resolve the issues faced by the students who wish to study abroad.”

“We have also requested the minister to issue a statement with regards to the same at the earliest, so that the concerns of students and their parents are addressed. We have also requested the government to try and end the impasse with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international organisations,” he said.

  • Arrested ABVP leader’s confession: Attacked Rakesh Tikait’s convoy in Alwar to get publicity

    Express News Service
JAIPUR: The attack on farmer leader Rakesh Tikait in Alwar on Friday was organised by a student leader of the Akhil Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) to garner publicity. Kuldeep Yadav, a student leader associated with ABVP, currently under arrest for the attack on Tikait’s convoy, has reportedly made this confession during interrogation by the Alwar police.

Kuldeep Yadav had become the President of the Alwar-based Matsya University in 2019 as an independent candidate. Later he joined the ABVP and senior BJP leaders had attended some of the functions he organised.

On Friday, Kuldeep Yadav, along with his supporters, showed black flags when the cavalcade of Rakesh Tikait was on its way to Bansur from Harsora village where the BKU supremo had addressed a gathering. This is when 33 people, according to the first information report (FIR), stopped his car on the pretext of welcoming him. Soon stones were pelted at the convoy of Rakesh Tikait, damaging the rear windshield of his car. The violent group reportedly broke the windows of the car with sticks and even threw black ink.

Sixteen people have so far been arrested on charges of attacking Rakesh Tikait’s convoy in Tatarpur village of Alwar district. An initial probe by the police has also revealed that Kuldeep Yadav even spent around 50,000 rupees to gather the youngsters who joined him in the attack on the BKU leader.

Soon after the attack, not only Rakesh Tikait but even Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot had taken to Twitter to slam the BJP for the attack on the convoy of the BKU supremo.

Kuldeep Yadav had to resign shortly after he became the President of the Alwar-based Matsya University in 2019 as there were allegations that his BA degree was fake.

Among those who are seen with Kuldeep Yadav are state BJP chief, Satish Poonia, MP of Alwar, Baba Balaknath and ABVP state Secretary Hoshiar Meena.

The additional SP of Alwar Gurusharan Rao remarked, “Kuldeep Yadav is trying to create a political space for himself and he has told us that he hoped to create a special identity for himself by organising this attack on Rakesh Tikait.” He further added, “Yadav had borrowed 3 lakh rupees from his uncle and spent about 50,000 on the youngsters who supported him in organising this attack.”

  • Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth elections: NSUI wins two seats, ABVP none

    By Express News Service
LUCKNOW: The National Students Union of India (NSUI) won two important seats in the Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth elections. Their candidates won the vice-president and general-secretary posts.

The president’s post went to the candidate from Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha, the student wing of SP. ABVP, the students’ body of BJP, did not win any major seat.

While Vimlesh Yadav won the contest for the president’s post, Sandeep Pal was elected vice-president and Prafulla Pandey the general-secretary.

Two candidates from their students’ wing emerging victorious in a state run by BJP and in the constituency of PM Modi should be a shot in the arm for Congress.

Also significant is ABVP’s failure to win an important post.

“Students have supported NSUI by defying ABVP hooliganism. We will win all positions in the next elections,” said Akhilesh Yadav, of the UP East unit of NSUI.
