  • TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee joins Koo platform

    By PTI

KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Sunday joined Koo social media platform, an Indian microblogging site available in several regional languages and English.

A senior TMC leader said Banerjee who tweets frequently on various issues will also be using Koo in a big way in the coming days and party members and supporters will be asked to install it on their mobile phones.

The Lok Sabha MP of Diamond Harbour is one of the key persons in the TMC who popularised Twitter among functionaries of the Mamata Banerjee-led party and its different wings.

The TMC and its Tripura unit already have Koo accounts and Abhishek Banerjee is following them.

His first post on Koo was on the use of a purported image of a Kolkata flyover in a full-page advertisement by the Uttar Pradesh government showcasing transformation of the state under its Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

“Transforming UP for @myogiadityanath means stealing images from infrastructure seen in Bengal under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership and using them as his own! Looks like the ‘DOUBLE ENGINE MODEL’ has MISERABLY FAILED in BJP’s strongest state and now stands EXPOSED for all!”, his post read.

Banerjee also attached the advertisement to the post.

  • Abhishek Banerjee’s allegations of harassment against Modi government in bad taste: BJP

    By PTI

KOLKATA: The West Bengal BJP on Monday said Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s allegations of harassment of political opponents against the Narendra Modi government were in bad taste.

Abhishek Banerjee, TMC MP and nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was questioned for about nine hours by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Delhi on Monday in a money laundering case linked to an alleged coal pilferage scam in the state.

After the questioning, the TMC MP accused the Narendra Modi regime of harassing political opponents.

BJP state spokesman Shamik Bhattacharya said “Being an MP, Banerjee’s comments of conspiracy were in bad taste.”

“However, we understand his frustration. He must have been tired after over 8 hours of questioning by the ED. It is an independent agency probing illegal money transactions. There is no role of the BJP in that. If he has complaints, why doesn’t he move the court?” BJP state president Dilip Ghosh claimed that the TMC sees conspiracy in everything.

TMC spokesman and state general secretary Kunal Ghosh said Abhishek Banerjee showed that the TMC won’t bow down to the pressure and threat tactics by the BJP government.

Stepping out from the agency’s Jam Nagar house office in central Delhi just before 8 PM, the 33-year-old MP hit out at the BJP, saying its “tyranny will be defeated” and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) will battle it out with “full vigour” against the party holding power at the Centre.

The MP from Diamond Harbour was grilled for close to nine hours after he entered the ED office shortly before 11 AM.

Officials said his statement was recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

He is understood to have been questioned about his links to the other accused involved in the case and in the context of two companies allegedly linked to his family in which some purported illegal transactions were done, they said.

The ED had filed the criminal case under the PMLA after studying a November 2020 FIR of the CBI that alleged a multi-crore coal pilferage scam related to Eastern Coalfields Ltd mines in the state’s Kunustoria and Kajora areas in and around Asansol.

“If BJP thinks that the Trinamool Congress will be scared or will bend, get defeated due to this (the ED case and questioning) or will sit at home like the Congress or any other party. We will fight out with you with full vigour and will go to each such state where you murdered democracy,” Banerjee, also the national general secretary of his party, told reporters outside the ED office.

‘”Apko jo ukhadna hai, aap ukhad lo (Do whatever you like). TMC will defeat the BJP in the upcoming polls,” he said.

A video link of this media interaction was also posted by the TMC on its official Twitter handle.

“The BJP’s tyranny will be defeated. Let BJP put all its might, vigour, threat, resources. Mind my words these resources are going to fall flat,” he said.

He continued: “We will give our lives, put our lives at stake but not bow down. We will not sell our spine to these autocrats, to these cowards who cannot defeat us politically.”

“Take my word, we have the fire in our belly and come what may, we will defeat them in 2024,” he said.

The West Bengal BJP had earlier said that the people of the state want the investigation in the case to be over within a time frame and the truth to unravel.

An alleged illegal coal operative of West Bengal, Anup Majhi alias Lala, is the prime suspect in the case.

The ED had claimed that Abhishek Banerjee was a beneficiary of funds obtained from this illegal trade.

His wife Rujira was also summoned by the agency in this case on September 1 but she did not appear citing the prevailing coronavirus situation and requested the agency to instead question her in Kolkata.

It is understood that the agency may grant her the relief.

Some Indian Police Service (IPS) officers and a lawyer linked to Abhishek Banerjee have also been summoned to appear on different dates in this month in the case.

Reacting to these summonses, Chief Minister Banerjee last week accused the Centre of letting loose its agencies on her nephew and claimed some BJP ministers were working “hand in glove” with the coal mafia.

The ED has arrested two people in this case till now.

One of them is Vikas Mishra, the brother of TMC youth wing leader Vinay Mishra, who is stated to have left the country sometime back and renounced his Indian citizenship.

The second person arrested in the case early this year is former Inspector in-charge of Bankura police station Ashok Kumar Mishra.

The ED had earlier claimed that the Mishra brothers received “proceeds of crime worth Rs 730 crore on behalf of some influential persons and for themselves” in this case involving an estimated amount of Rs 1,352 crore.

A “deep system” of political patronage and a “well-oiled machinery” were used to brazenly carry out certain unlawful coal mining in West Bengal, the ED has claimed before a court while seeking the remand of Inspector Mishra in April.

A charge sheet was also filed by the ED in May this year.

Quoting the recorded statement of an unidentified “close associate” of Majhi, the ED had earlier alleged that prime suspect Majhi had been running his “illegal coal mining business smoothly by managing senior functionaries of a political party of West Bengal though Inspector Mishra”.

The statement of this unidentified “witness” furnished by the ED in the remand note stated that “it is known fact that Vinay Mishra collected money from illegal coal mining of Majhi and his associates for his political boss in the present ruling party; that Vinay Mishra is the youth leader of TMC and he is very close to Abhishek Banerjee and that he (Vinay Mishra) is the eyes and ears of Abhishek Banerjee.”

The agency had claimed that documents seized by it show that “Majhi assisted in transferring substantial funds derived from the proceeds of crime to Shri Abhishek Banerjee’s close relatives (wife and sister-in-law) at London and Thailand.

  • Trinamool MP Abhishek Banerjee appears before ED in coal pilferage money laundering case

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Abhishek Banerjee, TMC MP and nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) here on Monday for questioning in a money laundering case linked to an alleged coal pilferage scam in the state, officials said.

The 33-year-old MP arrived at the office of the central agency at Jam Nagar house in central Delhi just before 11 AM.

“I am ready to face investigation, the agency officials are doing their work and I will cooperate with them,” he said.

The investigating officer of the case will record his statement under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), officials said.

Abhishek Banerjee represents the Diamond Harbour seat in the Lok Sabha and is the national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

The ED has filed a criminal case under the PMLA after studying a November, 2020 FIR of the CBI that alleged a multi-crore coal pilferage scam related to Eastern Coalfields Ltd mines in the state’s Kunustoria and Kajora areas in and around Asansol.

Speaking to reporters at the Kolkata airport on Sunday, the MP had said that he would get himself hanged if any central agency can prove his involvement in any illegal transaction.

Local coal operative in West Bengal, Anup Majhi alias Lala, is alleged to be the prime suspect in the case.

The ED had claimed that Abhishek Banerjee was a beneficiary of funds obtained from this illegal trade.

  • Will hang myself publicly if any corruption allegation is proved: Abhishek Banerjee

    By PTI

KOLKATA: Senior Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee Sunday said that he would get himself hanged if any central agency can bring to the fore his involvement in any illegal transaction.

Speaking to reporters at the Kolkata airport on his way to New Delhi to attend a summons by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with an alleged coal scam case, Banerjee accused the BJP of indulging in political vendetta having lost the state assembly elections.

“I reiterate what I had said in November at public meetings that if any central agency can prove my involvement in any illegal transaction of even 10 paise, there will be no need to hold any CBI or ED probe, I will walk up the podium and get myself hanged publicly,” he said.

He has been summoned to appear before the investigating officer of the case in New Delhi on September 6 for questioning in a money laundering case linked to the alleged coal scam in West Bengal.

“I am ready to face any and every kind of investigation,” Banerjee said, adding that despite it being a case of Kolkata, he was summoned to New Delhi.

“Having lost the elections and failing to tackle Trinamool Congress politically, they (BJP) are now seeking revenge,” he claimed.

The BJP has no other job than to use the investigating agencies to fulfil their political interests, he alleged.

Banerjee said that he would like to invite any BJP leader to sit face to face with him and discuss what the central agencies have done in the last five years and the fate of the country in the seven-year-rule of the Narendra Modi government.

“You (BJP) decide the date, time and venue and I will go; if I cannot expose them then I will not put my feet in the political arena anymore,” he asserted.

  • Trinamool accuses BJP of vendetta politics as ED issues summons to Abhishek Banerjee

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Friday accused the central government of “vendetta politics” over the recent summonses issued by the Enforcement Directorate to the party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and his wife Rujira.

The ED summonses came in a money laundering case related to alleged coal scam in West Bengal.

TMC MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray alleged that the summonses were issued as part of a vendetta by the BJP after it lost the recent Assembly polls in West Bengal.

In a press conference, Ray accused the BJP of misusing central investigation agencies against its political opponents, whereas investigations against its leaders are suppressed.

He said that the ED has joined the CBI in being a “caged parrot”.

“They (BJP) declared that they will capture West Bengal. They didn’t want to win hearts, they wanted to capture the state and its people. And now that they have failed in it, they are carrying out this witch-hunt. Abhishek Banerjee’s friends are also being hounded. Is this the duty of supposedly neutral agencies?” he asked.

He said that both the ED and the CBI have allowed themselves to work as “arms of the BJP.”

He also alleged that bureaucrats working in the West Bengal government are also being harassed without any evidence.

He said that the TMC was not bothered by such “false cases” and will counter these both politically and legally.

Ray also said that TMC was not the only opposition party being targeted and listed the income tax raids against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin’s daughter just days before the assembly elections in the state and the “harassment” of NCP patriarch Sharad Pawar before the Maharashtra elections.

He also alleged that when the time comes to act against its own leaders, the BJP has always looked the other way.

“Suvendu Adhikari was seen taking bribes on camera in the Narada case, but when the charge sheet was filed his name was missing because now he is under BJP protection,” Ray said, referring to the leader of opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.

The ED case, registered under criminal sections of the PMLA, was filed after studying a November, 2020 FIR of the CBI that alleged a multi-crore coal pilferage scam related to Eastern Coalfields Ltd.

mines in the state’s Kunustoria and Kajora areas in and around Asansol.

A “deep system” of political patronage and a “well-oiled” machinery was used to brazenly carry out certain unlawful coal mining in West Bengal, the ED has claimed.

  • Coal scam: TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee’s wife Rujira refuses to appear before ED

    By Express News Service

KOLKATA: Citing Covid pandemic, TMC leader and CM Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee’s wife Rujira Naroola Banerjee refused to appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED)’s New Delhi office on Wednesday in connecting with a coal smuggling and money laundering case.

In a letter written to ED’s assistant director Sumat Prakash Jain, Rujira said, “I am a mother of two infants, and travelling to New Delhi physically in the midst of the pandemic will put my and the lives of my children at grave risk.”

ED served the summon asking Rujira to turn up at the agency’s Delhi office on September 1. In connection with the same case, Abhishek was asked to appear in its Delhi office on September 3. Two other IPS officers, Gyanwant Singh (additional director general, CID) and Shyam Singh (deputy inspector general of police, Midnapore range) were also been asked to report to the agency’s office on September 9 and September 8 respectively.

Assuring cooperation, Rujira requested the central agency to follow the probe procedure at her Kolkata residence as the ED has its office in the state capital. “It would be convenient to me if you consider asking me to appear before you in Kolkata as and I reside in that city. Besides, as per my understanding, the alleged cause of action of the subject matter of your inquiry too arises out of Bengal,” she wrote.

The day the central agency served the summon, West Benegal CM had lambasted the BJP-led Centre accusing it to utilise the central agency vindictively. “They failed to fight with the TMC politically and now using CBI and ED against Abhishek. If I want, I can send bagful of evidence showing how BJP leaders looted Bengal’s coal region,” she had said while addressing on the occasion of the foundation day of TMC’s student-wing virtually on August 28.

The CBI, in February, had questioned Rujira in connection with the coal scam case at her south Kolkata residence. Abhishek’s sister-in-law Maneka Gambhir had also been questioned by the CBI.

  • ED summons Trinamool MP Abhishek Banerjee, wife in money laundering case

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned MP Abhishek Banerjee, nephew of West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, and his wife for questioning in a money laundering case linked to an alleged coal scam in the state, officials said on Saturday.

Abhishek Banerjee represents the Diamond Harbour seat in Lok Sabha and is also the national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

He has been summoned to appear before the investigating officer of the case here on September 6 while his wife Rujira has been sent a similar summon under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) for September 1.

Few others linked to the case have also been summoned to appear on different dates next month, the officials said.

The case, filed under criminal sections of the (PMLA), was filed by the ED after studying a November, 2020 FIR of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that alleged a multi-crore coal pilferage scam related to the Eastern Coalfields Ltd mines in the state’s Kunustoria and Kajora areas in and around Asansol.

Local state operative Anup Majhi alias Lala is alleged to be the prime suspect in the case.

The ED had earlier claimed that Abhishek Banerjee was a beneficiary of funds obtained from this illegal trade. He has been denying all charges.

  • Tripura HC refuses to stay police probe against TMC general-secretary Abhishek Banerjee, five others

    By PTI

AGARTALA: The Tripura High Court on Wednesday refused to put a stay on the investigation against TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and five others for allegedly obstructing police officers from performing their duties, and asked the state government to justify within two weeks why the case should not be quashed.

A complaint has been registered in Tripura against Banerjee, MP Dola Sen, West Bengal education minister Bratya Basu, TMC’s Tripura leader Subal Bhowmick and two others under section 186 of the IPC for allegedly coming in the way of the police who were carrying out their duties.

Senior TMC leader Subal Bhowmick subsequently filed a plea before the court seeking dismissal of the case and a stay on the investigation against the TMC leaders. Justice AA Kureshi, while hearing the case, asked the state government to file a reply in two weeks on why the case should not be dismissed, and asked the police to continue with the investigation.

However, the judge maintained that the police should not submit its final report without consulting the court. Kiran Kumar, the superintendent of police (SP) in Khowai district, had said that a suo moto complaint was filed on August 10 against the TMC leaders, who “misbehaved” with officers on duty two days ago.

“We booked them on August 10 under Section 186 (obstruction of public servants in the discharge of his public function) and 36 (common intention) of the IPC. The FIR pertains to entry into the Khowai police station. They will be summoned,” the SP had stated.

At least 14 leaders and workers of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) were arrested in Khowai district on August 8, including those injured in an alleged attack by BJP men the day before, for “flouting COVID-19 norms”.

Shortly after, the party’s national general secretary, who is also West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew and the de facto number 2 in the party, flew to Agartala from Bengal to meet the apprehended workers in Khowai police station.

Those arrested were later produced before a local court, which granted them bail. In a video that went viral on social media, the TMC national general secretary was seen raising his finger to enquire why his supporters were arrested “after having faced assaults”.

According to the police, the 14 TMC members were nabbed for venturing out after the imposition of night curfew at 7 pm, in violation of the COVID-19 restrictions. Bhowmik, when approached by reporters during the day, said, “We are happy that the high court has admitted the case. Let the police investigate…the truth will come out.”

  • ‘One person, one post’: Old guards make way for fresh faces in massive organisational change in Trinamool

    By PTI

KOLKATA: The Trinamool Congress on Monday brought about a massive organisational change, inducting several fresh faces and axing old guards, with a special thrust on toning up the party in areas where it has yielded ground to the BJP.

TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s imprint was visible in the reshuffle as his policy of ‘one person, one post’ led to several old guards losing their posts.

At the same time, the ruling party in West Bengal formed several new district committees with a mix of experienced leaders and young turks.

For the first time since its formation in 1998, the TMC divided the 23 administrative districts of the state into the party’s 35 organisational districts.

State cabinet ministers Jyotipriyo Mullick, Arup Ray, Soumen Mahapatra and Swapan Debnath were relieved of their responsibilities as the TMC district presidents of North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Purba Medinipur and Purba Bardhaman respectively.

Krishnanagar MP Mahua Moitra too was dropped as the party’s Nadia district chief.

TMC Lok Sabha party leader Sudip Bandopadhyay was dropped as the North Kolkata district president and made chairman of the district committee.

Baranagar MLA and former state minister Tapas Ray was appointed as the new district chief of North Kolkata.

The party’s youth wing, the Trinamool Youth Congress, also underwent sweeping changes with all leaders above the age of 40 being axed from their posts and new chiefs being appointed in several district units.

“We are pleased to announce the new organisational appointments at state & district level for West Bengal. We remain indebted to all outgoing members for their valuable contribution. Best wishes to all new appointees! #OnePersonOnePost,” the party’s official Twitter handle posted.

The party presidents of several districts including Howrah, Coochbehar, Purulia, Hooghly, Paschim Medinipur, Nadia, Bankura, Jhargram, Malda, Murshidabad and North and South Dinajpur were removed, and fresh faces given charge of the new organisational districts.

The change was imminent as the dual responsibilities of various TMC leaders were affecting the organisation at the grassroots level, a senior party leader said.

“Several party leaders were holding dual portfolios such as district president and state minister. So as per the ‘one person, one post’ policy, it was expected that many would lose their post of district president or other organisational responsibilities,” he said.

“The reshuffle has been done keeping in mind several factors like areas where the BJP has gained ground and places from where complaints of infighting have been received. The party tried to ensure a mix of old and new, and give disgruntled but effective leaders important roles,” another senior leader privy to the developments said.

The change of guard in north Bengal and parts of south Bengal was necessary as the BJP has gained ground in several districts and the former TMC leadership had failed to put up a fight, he said.

The BJP had made deep inroads in West Bengal during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections by securing 18 of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in the state, pushing down the TMC’s tally to 22 from 34.

However, riding on various populist measures and welfare schemes, the TMC made an astounding comeback in the 2021 assembly polls by winning 213 of the 294 assembly seats in the state.

  • Tripura Police registers FIR against Trinmaool MPs Abhishek Banerjee, Dola Sen for misbehaving with cops

    By ANI

AGARTALA: Tripura Police registered FIR against Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs Abhishek Banerjee, Dola Sen and other party leaders for misbehaving with Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) and the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Khowai and preventing them from discharging their duty.

Apart from Banerjee, the case has also been registered against West Bengal minister Bratya Basu and party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh.

The FIR states that following the arrest of 14 TMC leaders and workers on Sunday morning, a group of party workers led by minister Bratya Basu and MP Dola Sen reached the Khowai police station. Soon, Abhishek Banerjee also reached the station.

The police have stated that the group of TMC leaders misbehaved with the Additional SP and other police personnel and also shouted at them.

Tripura Police have registered a complaint against the top TMC leaders for misbehaving with the Additional SP and SDPO of Khowai and obstructing police personnel from discharging duty.

Last week, TMC alleged that its party workers were attacked by the BJP workers in Agartala. Abhishek Banerjee, MP from West Bengal and TMC member, accused BJP of choking democracy in Tripura.

However, Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) West Bengal unit chief Dilip Ghosh on Monday termed it as ‘drama’ and said she has a habit of doing it.
