  • As Kappan’s wife readies to move SC for his bail, daughter in her I-day speech calls for citizens’ freedom

    By Online Desk

CHENNAI: As India celebrated its 76th Independence Day, the wife of journalist Siddique Kappan  — booked and jailed under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) in the Hathras conspiracy case –said that she is running around doing procedural works to move Supreme Court for her husband’s bail, while Kappan’s nine-year-old daughter said that ordinary citizens’ freedom is not taken away.

“When her school authorities asked her to deliver a speech in view of Independence Day, she asked Independence for whom?” Siddique Kappan’s wife Raihanath told TNIE.

“I am the daughter of a journalist who has been left to languish in jail, by being denied the basic civil rights available to all Indian citizens,” is how the nine-year-old began her Independence day speech at her school on Monday, a video of which has gone viral on social media.

According to a PTI report, in her little over two-minute-long speech, she said that every Indian has the right to resist or oppose those asking them to leave, they have the choice to decide what to speak, eat or which religion to profess and all this is possible due to the struggles and sacrifices of freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Bhagat Singh, and countless others.

“Remembering all those freedom fighters, my request is not to take away the freedom and rights of the ordinary citizens,” she said.

She also said that India’s pride should not be surrendered before anyone.

In her speech, she further said that there was still unrest in the country as it was evident from the violence on the basis of religion, color or politics and said that the same should be “rooted out with love and unity”.

“Even the shadow of any unrest should be wiped out. We all should live as one and should make every effort to take India to the top. We should dream of a better tomorrow without any differences and conflicts,” she said.

“As India steps into its 76th Independence day, on this special occasion, as an Indian with unwavering pride and authority, I would like to say ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’,” she said.

Meanwhile, Raihanath noted that after the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court dismissed her husband’s bail application she is presently engaged in procedural works to move the Supreme Court. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal has agreed to appear for Kappan, she added.

While rejecting Kappan’s bail plea, the court held that  “the use of tainted money cannot be ruled out”.

Prior to that, a Mathura court had rejected Kappan’s bail plea after which he had approached the high court.

The Uttar Pradesh police arrested Kappan, a reporter for a Malayalam news portal Azhimukham and secretary of the Delhi unit of the Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) and three others accompanying him on October 5, 2020, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and The Information Technology Act while they were on way to Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district where a Dalit woman was allegedly gang-raped on September 14, 2020. Police had claimed that the accused were trying to disturb law and order in Hathras. They had also alleged that the accused had links with the Popular Front of India (PFI).

The rape victim had died at a Delhi hospital a fortnight after her alleged rape by four men from her village on September 14, 2020.

She was cremated in the middle of the night in her village.

Her family members claimed that the cremation, which took place well past midnight, was without her consent and that they were not allowed to bring home the body one last time.

The Prime Minister also said that India has been home to great thinkers like Vivekanand, Aurobindo and Rabindranath Tagore. “Our heroes like Rajendra Prasad, Jawaharlal Nehru, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, Lal Bahadur Shastri fought for our independence and moulded our country.”

He also gave a powerful message to the nation to take a pledge. “It’s important that in speech and conduct, we do nothing that lowers the dignity of women,” he said.

“I have one request to every Indian. Can we change the mentality towards our women in everyday life? The pride of Nari Shakti will play a vital role in fulfilling the dreams of India. On unity

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for unity among people while pointing out that sometimes the country’s talent is restricted by its language barriers, urged countrymen to be proud of every language. “Sometimes our talent is restricted by language barriers. This is an example of Imperialism. When we are connected to our roots, then only can we fly high; and when we fly high, we will provide solutions to the entire world,” asserted the Prime Minister in his address to the nation today.

“Community spirit has risen again in the last few years. For the last three days, the entire country has marched with tricolour,” he said adding that “India has seen a lot of ups and downs in the last 75 years. There have been sorrows as well as achievements in these years. We faced natural calamities, wars and other problems. But unity in diversity became our guiding power.”

    On Green Jobs

Prime Minister said there are multiple employment opportunities opened with the creation of Green Jobs.

“Jai Jawan, Jai Kisaan, Jai Vigyaan, Jai Anusandhan – as we celebrate 75 years, we need to follow this mantra that was given to us by Lal Bahadur Shastri and later tweaked by Atal Bihari Vajpayee.”

He also took aim at the evils and sought the people’s cooperation to fight them. The Prime Minister said that the country needs to shift its mentality from “Bhai-Bhatijawad” and Parivaarwad (nepotism) and give an opportunity to the citizens who deserve it.

    On corruption

Addressing the country from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the country’s 76th Independence Day, the Prime Minister said that there is no place for corruption in our society and that the people of the country need to come together as a society to punish those who have propagated the evil of corruption. “Today the nation shows anger towards corruption, but not the corrupted. Until and unless, people have the mentality of penalizing the corrupt, the nation cannot progress at optimum pace.”

To cleanse every institute of India, let’s shift our mentality from ‘Bhai Bhatijawad’ and Parivaarwad and give an opportunity to the citizens who deserve it.”

  • Self-obsessed government hell-bent on trivialising freedom fighters’ sacrifices: Sonia Gandhi

    By Agencies

NEW DELHI: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday alleged that a “self-obsessed” government is hell-bent on “trivialising” the sacrifices of freedom fighters and the party will strongly oppose such attempts made for political gains.

Gandhi’s attack came a day after the BJP released a video narrating its version of events that led to India’s partition in 1947 in which it tangentially accused the top Congress leadership at the time and showed pictures of Jawaharlal Nehru and Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

The Congress had also taken a strong exception to the exclusion of India’s first prime minister Nehru in the Karnataka government’s newspaper advertisement on freedom fighters and termed the BJP action “pathetic”.

“Friends, we have achieved a great deal in the last 75 years, but today’s self-obsessed government is bent on trivialising the great sacrifices of our freedom fighters and the glorious achievements of the country, which can never be accepted,” Gandhi said in her message on India’s 76th Independence Day.

“The Congress will strongly oppose any misrepresentation of historical facts and every attempt to put great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Abul Kalam Azad in the dock based on falsehood for “political gains”, she said.

Sonia Gandhi said that in the last 75 years, India has left an indelible mark on the international arena in all fields including science, education, health and information technology through the hard work of its talented people.

“Under the leadership of its visionary leaders, while on one hand, India established a free, fair and transparent election system, on the other, it strengthened democracy and constitutional institutions,” the Congress chief said.

Along with this, India has made its identity as a leading country that has always lived up to pluralism in language, religion and sect, she added.

Meanwhile, the Congress party had organised a tricolour rally Monday — Azadi Gaurav Yatra — which originated from its central headquarters in the national capital. It saw the participation of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra among other leaders.

“The streets of Delhi today experienced Gaurav Yatra of India’s independence. This was the vow of Congressmen who came out with tricolour in their hands – they had achieved freedom, now they will also save it,” the Congress party tweeted in Hindi after the Tricolour rally.
