Indian Railways is redefining connectivity with approval for 100 ambitious projects worth ₹1.53 lakh crore, covering more than 6,000 km of new and upgraded tracks. This fiscal year 2025-26 rollout under PM Gati Shakti eclipses last year’s efforts, with a 56% jump in project numbers, 114% in coverage, and over 110% in investment from ₹72,869 crore for 2,800 km.

From new lines and multi-tracking to strategic bypasses and flyovers, the focus is on easing congestion, slashing travel times, and linking far-flung, impoverished areas. Maharashtra leads with 17 projects, followed by Bihar (11), Jharkhand (10), and Madhya Pradesh (9), targeting freight efficiency and passenger comfort in logistics hubs.

Standout investments feature the massive Kasara-Manmad upgrade at ₹10,150 crore, Kharasia-Naya Raipur lines at ₹8,740 crore, Itarsi-Nagpur fourth line at ₹5,450 crore, and Secunderabad-Wadi expansions. Over 35 projects exceed ₹1,000 crore each, fortifying trunk routes under the ‘Mission 3000 MT’ for enhanced freight capacity.

Energy corridors ensure swift coal and mineral transport, high-density upgrades reduce bottlenecks, and port-focused initiatives amplify trade. Beyond infrastructure, these efforts integrate tribal regions via lines like Raoghat-Jagdalpur, unlocking access to markets, healthcare, and jobs. The ripple effects? Explosive employment, lower logistics expenses, and accelerated GDP growth, positioning railways as the backbone of a unified India.
