Today is the birth anniversary of Jaishankar Prasad. Jaishankar Prasad was born on 30 January 1889 in Varanasi. Hindi plays a special place in the Natya Jagat and Katha literature. Jaishankar Prasad was born at the time when Khadi Boli and modern Hindi literature were making their debut in adolescence. The poet’s grandfather Shiva Ratna Sahu was a highly respected citizen of Varanasi and was known as ‘Sundhani Sahu’ for making a special type of Surti tobacco. His charity was well known and he was respected by scholars. Jaishankar Prasad’s father Deviprasad Sahu also followed the tradition of his ancestors. This family was counted among the most prosperous houses of Varanasi and there was no lack of wealth. Prasad’s family was a worshiper of Shiva. The parents prayed to their presiding deity for their birth. Jaishankar Prasad was called as ‘Jharkhandi’ in the early childhood, from Vaidyanath Dham’s Jharkhand to Ujjayini’s worship of Mahakal, as a result of his son accepting birth. Jaishankar Prasad’s naming ceremony took place in Vaidyanathdham itself. He died on 15 November 1937.
