The city is famous as the cultural city of Chhattisgarh due to its cultural heritage. Prior to independence, Raigad was not the direct rule of the British, but the kingdom of kings. After the independence of India, it became the first state to join the Indian Union, which was included in the state of Madhya Pradesh as Raigad district. Maharaj Madan Singh is considered the founder of Raigad state. He came from Bairagarh village in Chanda district, Maharashtra. Earlier Raigad was a part of Sambalpur state and Madan Singh was feudal of the Sambalpur king, he established his independent kingdom in the mercury period. Madan Singh was succeeded by his successors Takhat Singh, Beth Singh, Dilip Singh, Jujhar Singh, Devnath Singh, Ghanshyam Singh, Bhupdev Singh and Chakradhar Singh respectively. Chakradhar Singh Maharaj was the last king of independent Raigad state.
