IIT Bombay, India’s leading engineering institute, will provide technical support and consultants to improve various livelihood activities conducted in Raigad district. With the help of this, the products will be made more profitable by reducing the variety, quality and cost of the products. Along with this, work will also be done on aspects like providing proper technical training and vocational training to women associated with livelihood activities. A 3-member team led by Professor Bakul Rao from the Center for Technology Alternatives for Rural Areas, IIT Bombay is on a visit to Raigad district. Here she is studying the work of women’s groups in Gauthans and rural areas and how local traditional products are prepared. The team of IIT Bombay along with District Collector Mr. Bhim Singh and CEO District Panchayat Dr. Ravi Mittal discussed the possibilities of technologically improving the various activities conducted in the district by meeting with the district magistrates of the departments related to livelihood promotion. In which mainly making strong and durable furniture from bamboo products as well as small products of fast moving consumer goods category like paper clips, soap cases, water bottles etc., from which more and more daily needs household products are prepared from bamboo. Taxes can be created to create a big market for the people associated with this mode. Similarly, the thread which is used in the warp to make silk cloth. In it, the thread of the weasel is prepared locally. But the weavers are still dependent on foreign imports for a strong warp. In such a situation, work will also be done to prepare economical and strong warp for silk fabrics here. Discussions also took place on making it easier by using 3D printing technology for the famous Dhokra craft artifacts of Raigad district. The possibilities of preparing different products from para and cow dung were also discussed in the meeting. The team of IIT Bombay went to Gauthan and saw the work being done there. The team spoke to the women of the group and got to know their experiences. The team members also took feedback from the officials. On the basis of which, apart from creating a strong and profitable model by combining technology development and effective working process for conducting livelihood activities, better utilization of available space and resources in Gauthans can be made more beneficial for the groups. The team will also work towards better packaging and market linkage of the products being manufactured here. The team arrived from IIT Bombay works at the Center for Technology Alternatives for Rural Areas. This 3-member team consists of Professor Bakul Rao, Professor Sushma Kulkarni and Shri Yatin Diwakar. The team has more than 20 years of experience in working in the fields of education, health, agriculture and water resources, women empowerment, rural livelihood promotion, skill development, agro-forestry, rural areas.
