The first trans-catheter aortic valve replacement procedure of a 70-year-old elderly patient was treated for heart disease on Saturday at the Advanced Cardiac Institute of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital. The cost of TAVR procedure in a private hospital is about 25 lakhs. This treatment of heart disease of poor patients was provided free of cost under the Dr. Khubchand Baghel Health Assistance Scheme of Chhattisgarh Government in ACI. A 70-year-old patient from a small village near Raigad was suffering from shortness of breath. The investigation found an aortic bicuspid valve. The patient’s heart was severely impaired due to severe valve stenosis. The cardiac surgeon refused to perform a heart operation in view of a serious heart disease. In such a situation, trans-catheter aortic valve replacement was planned for the treatment of patient’s disease in ACI. The transcutaneous aortic valve was inserted through the thigh artery, without being unconscious and without making any incision on the chest. Head of Department of Cardiology, Dr. Prof. Smit Srivastava explains that currently only 30 institutions in the country have trans-catheter aortic valve replacement facilities. Advance Cardiac Institute, Medical College Raipur also joined this list on 9 January with the first TAVR procedure.
