Tanvi Sharma Becomes Youngest Champion in Taipei Open History

In a landmark performance at the Taipei Open, 17‑year‑old Tanvi Sharma secured the women’s singles crown, becoming the youngest champion ever recorded in any category of the tournament. She defeated Vietnam’s sixth‑seed Nguyen Thuy Linh 21‑16, 21‑16 in a match that lasted just 36 minutes.

Sharma opened the first game with a flurry, leading 10‑2 before closing it at 21‑16. After a short 0‑3 start in the second game, she swiftly turned the tide, building a seven‑point cushion and again finishing 21‑16. Her aggressive style, featuring sharp cross‑court drops and accurate placement, prevented Linh from establishing any rhythm.

The triumph adds Sharma to an exclusive club of Indian women who have captured Super 300 or higher titles, joining Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu and Devika Siddharth. It also ended a 17‑year spell without an Indian champion at Taipei, the previous victory having come in 2009. Sharma reflected on her achievement, saying she stayed calm, gave her all on every point, and felt proud to bring the trophy home for India.
