Young Indian Athletes Shine as Nation Achieves Fourth Place in 2026 Asian Games

At a ceremonial audience with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya highlighted the youthful vigor behind India’s fourth‑place finish at the 2026 Asian Games. The 501‑strong squad averaged just 25 years of age, with 310 athletes making their debut on the continental stage.

Mandaviya praised the Prime Minister’s push for a transparent, camera‑recorded selection system that guarantees fairness and meritocracy. This openness allowed 106 debutants to win 41 medals, contributing to a total haul of 85 medals—22 of which came from 14 sports that India contested for the first time.

Women athletes played a pivotal role, capturing 47 medals and setting seven new national, six Asian, and a world record. The minister linked these outcomes to ongoing reforms such as Fit India, the Sports India Policy, and the recently sanctioned Rs 36,000‑crore Sports India programme, all of which have created a supportive ecosystem for the country’s next generation of sportspersons.
