Yohann Benjamin's move to Europe marks a milestone for Indian football

The recent signing of Indian midfielder Yohann Benjamin by Portugal’s Guarda FC is being hailed as a landmark moment for Indian football’s growing presence in Europe.

The two‑year contract, which will become effective once international clearance and a work visa are secured, underscores the club’s ambition to open doors for talent from India, Asia and other developing football regions. The club’s leadership praised Benjamin’s ambition, work ethic and hunger for success, describing him as the type of player they aim to develop.

Rui Ferreira, the club’s manager, explained that the scouting network is focused on uncovering talent across South Asia, emphasizing that the goal is to nurture players wherever they emerge. He highlighted Benjamin’s adaptability and potential to flourish within Guarda’s system.

Benjamin himself called the deal a pivotal step in his European adventure, offering a platform to compete at a higher level and prove his worth. He expressed gratitude to the club for the confidence placed in him.

Born in Mumbai, Benjamin’s football education spanned several academies, including Conscience Football Mumbai, the Football Academy of Bangalore and Minerva Academy. He joined Shillong Lajong in early 2022, progressing from the academy to senior and reserve squads. His nine‑goal haul in the 2024 Shillong Premier League helped Lajong secure the title, and he also contributed to a runner‑up finish in the Meghalaya State League.

His performances earned him a spot in the AIFF Youth League, where he scored nine goals in 13 matches and earned a call‑up to the India Under‑19 team. After representing India at the 2025 SAFF Under‑19 Championship, he moved to NK Bravo Under‑19 in Slovenia, becoming the first Indian to feature in a UEFA Youth League campaign.
