How Yoga Became the Star Attraction for China and South Africa at Ahmedabad Event
The first day of the BRICS Traditional and Indigenous Demonstration Games in Ahmedabad turned into a showcase of India’s cultural sports, with yoga emerging as the marquee attraction for visiting Chinese and South African teams.
A crowd of about 3,000 gathered at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex to watch a dynamic Mallakhamb display, which set the stage for a meticulously timed rhythmic yoga performance. Delegates from China and South Africa praised the discipline for its therapeutic qualities, noting that yoga helps with detoxification, stress reduction, and improving flexibility.
Chef‑de‑Mission Yi Liu of China remarked on the learning opportunities the event provided, especially after observing young participants mastering complex movements. South African Chef‑de‑Mission Filasande McVilli added that yoga is widely practiced back home and that the Indian demonstration reinforced its global relevance.
Beyond the performances, the event facilitated knowledge sharing, with a Chinese wushu athlete being coached on nuances of the art by Indian experts at the national sports centre. The hospitality received—from airport dance welcomes to a menu blending local and international flavors—was singled out as exceptional by all delegations.
