Women’s Heavyweight Triumphs Signal New Era for Indian Boxing

For the first time, Indian women proved their mettle in the heavyweight category when Lovlina Borgohain converted her 2023 silver into gold at the Hangzhou Asian Games, becoming only the second Indian woman to achieve this feat after Mary Kom’s 2014 triumph.

Borgohain’s victory, along with strong showings from other female boxers in higher weight classes, shattered the long‑standing belief that Indian boxing excels only in lighter divisions. The BFI chief celebrated this breakthrough, noting that the success will inspire a new generation of athletes across all weight categories.
