Wimbledon opener: Djokovic beats Wu in four sets

Novak Djokovic, a seven‑time Wimbledon champion, began his 21st edition at the All England Club with a 6‑4, 5‑7, 6‑4, 6‑4 triumph over China’s Yibing Wu on 30 June.

Ranked 102 globally, Wu produced 15 winners in the opening set, but mirrored them with as many unforced errors, granting Djokovic the first break and the set.

Early in the second set Djokovic earned a break, yet Wu responded swiftly, securing a break of his own and taking the set 7‑5, which equalised the contest.

Although battling a shoulder injury that has limited his season to just five tournaments, Djokovic broke Wu’s serve late in the third set and held serve to clinch it 6‑4 after a series of extended rallies.

In the final set Djokovic displayed resilience, saving six break points—including three at 2‑3 down—before sealing the match in 3 hours 11 minutes, taking his Wimbledon first‑round record to 21‑0.

This match marked Djokovic’s first grass‑court event of the season and his fifth tour‑level tournament overall. With 101 tour‑level titles to his name, his standout 2026 result was a run to the Australian Open final.

Post‑match Djokovic remarked, “Wu should be highly praised for his brilliant play; he put a lot of pressure on me. I could have lost the fourth set. Few points decide a match, but my 20‑year experience helped me manage the pressure.”
