Legacy of Wilson Jones – Twelve National Titles and Two World Crowns
Wilson Jones’ name is synonymous with dominance in Indian billiards. He first stepped onto the national stage in 1949, and despite a defeat to T.J. Selvaraj, he returned in 1950 to win his inaugural national championship. Over the next two decades, Jones would replicate that triumph eleven more times, a feat that still stands unmatched.
His international résumé is equally impressive. After unfulfilled attempts in 1951, 1952 and 1954, Jones broke through at the 1958 World Billiards Championship, capturing the coveted title and becoming the first Indian to do so. He added a second world championship in 1964, after a narrow loss in the 1962 final.
Beyond the trophies, Jones contributed to the sport’s institutional growth. Upon retiring in 1967, he devoted himself to coaching, guiding protégés such as Om Agrawal, Subhash Agrawal and Ashok Shandilya, many of whom later became national champions themselves.
The Indian government honored his extraordinary career with the Arjuna Award (1962), Padma Shri (1965), Maharashtra Gaurav Award (1990) and the Dronacharya Award (1996). Wilson Jones passed away on 5 October 2003, but his record of twelve national titles and two world crowns remains a benchmark for future generations.
