Why removing IPL’s impact player rule now would be unwise, expert warns
Dinesh Kartik, batting coach of the Royal Challengers Bangalore, cautioned against an immediate end to the impact player rule. He explained that the rule was introduced to increase scoring rates and keep matches competitive, which it achieved during its early years. Over the past season, however, the novelty has worn off, leading to uneven contests where one side builds a massive total and the other chases with ease. Kartik said that despite these concerns, the rule should stay until at least the 2027 season to avoid mid‑cycle disruption. He also noted that the rule’s existence has inadvertently limited the development of Indian all‑rounders, a point that the IPL board must consider in future policy decisions.
