Geopolitical fireworks in the Middle East have grounded the Indian women’s wrestling squad in Albania’s capital, Tirana, turning a triumphant tournament exit into an unexpected layover. The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and government officials have stepped in, ensuring the team’s well-being amid closed airspaces.
Following Iran’s missile barrages on targets in UAE, Qatar, and other Gulf states—retaliation for US and Israeli actions—airlines scrambled, canceling flights worldwide. The fallout hit the 16 Indian women wrestlers fresh off the Muhammad Malla 2026 rankings series.
Unlike the men’s freestyle contingent, who made it back post-competition, the women are holed up safely near Tirana airport. Coach Manjeet praised the rapid support: ‘No problems here; we’re secure, thanks to WFI and India’s quick aid.’
Virender Singh, the chief coach, echoed the sentiment. ‘Calls from the sports ministry and federation came right away post-cancellation. They’ve promised no hardships until skies clear.’
India’s strong showing at the event included U-23 champ Sujit Kalkal’s gold in 65kg freestyle, plus three silvers and three bronzes across categories. With 48 wrestlers dispatched in total, the mission succeeded on the mat, even as return journeys hang in balance due to the Iran-Israel standoff.
