Wellington T20: India Look to Extend Lead; Bhuvi, Vaibhav in Focus
India enter the third T20 against New Zealand in Wellington on Tuesday with a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. A victory here would give them an unassailable 3-0 advantage, and attention will be on two players in particular: experienced pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar and young batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi.
India's batting has been the highlight so far. The team chased 226 and 181 runs in the first two matches to secure victories, showing both depth and consistency in the lineup. The side will want its batters to continue that trend in the third game.
Abhishek Sharma has not been able to score a big innings in either of the first two matches, and he will be looking to change that on Tuesday. Sanju Samson made 67 runs in the opening game but was held to 14 in the second. Along with Abhishek, India will want Samson to provide another explosive start.
Naman Dhir has been among the more consistent performers, scoring well in both matches. Shreyas Iyer delivered a good innings in the first T20, while Tilak Varma did so in the second. Both Shreyas and Tilak are expected to be important again as the series progresses.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi was included in the playing XI for the second T20 in Christchurch, replacing the injured Ishan Kishan. However, he was unable to make an impact with the bat, managing four runs off eight balls. Ishan is set to miss the third match as well, which may give Vaibhav another opportunity. He will need to seize that chance.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar returns to the Indian side after four years, but his form has been disappointing so far. Across eight overs in the first two games, he has given away 99 runs at an economy rate of 12.37 and taken just one wicket. These numbers fall well short of his career standards. India will hope he delivers a performance in keeping with his stature.
Wellington is traditionally a sporting pitch. Of the 18 T20 matches held at the venue since 2016, the average score has been close to 165, and chasing teams have won 10 of them. Based on this trend, both sides are likely to prefer batting if they win the toss.
Weather conditions may also influence the game. Strong winds of up to 55 km/h are expected on the day before the match, which could affect shot-making, catching and bowling plans. A little rain has been forecast, but conditions are expected to improve before play starts.
The third T20 will begin at 12:30 PM IST.
