The Delhi High Court on Thursday intervened in favor of wrestler Vinesh Phogat, allowing her to take part in the upcoming Asian Games 2026 selection trials starting May 30. The decision comes after the Wrestling Federation of India had barred her from competing due to eligibility norms tied to recent tournament performances. Justice Upadhyay and Justice Karia observed that Vinesh missed the required competitions because she was recovering from childbirth. They stressed that sports governing bodies cannot penalize female athletes for taking necessary time off during pregnancy and post-natal recovery. The court also took strong exception to the tone of the notice sent by the federation, which had labeled her Olympic performance as a matter of national shame. Such remarks, the bench said, reflect outdated attitudes and possible bias against the athlete. Vinesh had challenged the federation’s decision after her single-bench plea was rejected. She argued that the eligibility criteria failed to account for maternity-related absences. The division bench agreed, directing that she be permitted to compete in the trials. This ruling is expected to prompt sports federations across India to review their selection policies and ensure they accommodate the realities faced by women athletes returning after motherhood.
