Veteran coach Matthew Mott takes over Sydney Sixers men's side for two seasons

Sydney Sixers announced today that former England white‑ball head coach Matthew Mott will assume the role of head coach of their men’s Big Bash League team on a two‑year contract. The 52‑year‑old replaces James Hopes, who resigned after a brief period of managing both Queensland and Brisbane Heat.

Mott’s connection with the Sixers runs deep. He served as the club’s assistant coach for two seasons and was in charge of the women’s squad last summer, steering them to the BBL Challenger final. The franchise expects his wealth of experience to elevate the men’s side as it prepares for the next BBL campaign.

Over a 20‑year coaching career, Mott has held senior positions with England’s limited‑overs teams, guiding them to the 2022 T20 World Cup title, and spent seven years leading the Australian women’s team to multiple world championships and a record 26 consecutive ODI wins.

Commenting on the appointment, Mott said, "I have long been part of the Sixers family, and taking the head‑coach role for the men’s side is a great honor. The club’s winning culture and strong foundations give us an excellent platform to build on."

He added that while he will miss the women’s program, he wishes captain Ashleigh Gardner and the entire WBBL squad a successful 12th season.
