Venkata Raju: From Spin Sensation to Nightwatchman Standout

New Delhi, July 8 – Venkata Raju’s name may not dominate cricket record books, but his contributions to Indian spin bowling and a memorable debut as a night‑watchman have earned him a special place in fans’ memories. In his inaugural Test against New Zealand in 1990, Raju was sent in at the fall of a wicket and held the crease for over two hours, scoring 32 runs under pressure.

Born on July 9, 1969, in Alamuru, Andhra Pradesh, Raju displayed a passion for cricket from a young age. His skillful turn and flight convinced selectors after a prolific 1989‑90 season in which he took 32 first‑class wickets.

During his international stint, Raju featured in 28 Tests, picking up 93 wickets with a 30 average and five five‑wick haul achievements. He also played 53 One Day Internationals, claiming 63 wickets at an economy of 4.36, his best ODI figures being 4 for 46.

Raju was part of the victorious Indian team at the 1990‑91 Asia Cup and represented the nation at the 1992 and 1996 World Cups. Chronic injuries, however, truncated his playing days, leading to his final ODI in 1996 and his last Test appearance at Eden Gardens in 2001.
