U-20 World Athletics: India’s Kamboj Advances to Discus Finals

Eugene’s Under‑20 World Athletics meet witnessed Amanat Kamboj’s breakthrough on Thursday when she threw the discus 52.58 meters in the qualifiers, securing a slot in the women's final slated for Saturday. The distance placed her sixth among all U‑20 discus competitors worldwide.

Having clinched the Asian U‑20 gold earlier this year with a 52.24‑meter throw, Kamboj’s performance marked a personal season high. She becomes the third Indian finalist in the discus discipline, following Ashish Yadav and T. Dharani Dharan, who have already reached the men’s javelin final.

Ashish Yadav led his qualification group with a 69.87‑meter javelin, while Dharani Dharan qualified with 68.07 meters, ranking 12th overall. South Africa’s Jan‑Hendrik Hemans automatically qualified for the javelin final with a 76.02‑meter effort. Close behind were three athletes who cleared 69 meters, including India’s Yadav, Poland’s Alexander Wojna (69.80 m) and China’s Yang Zhaoyi (69.80 m), promising a tight contest.

In the men’s 800 metres, Mogli Venkataram advanced to the semi‑finals after posting 1:52.81 for third place, while Uvin Anand recorded 1:52.37. The mixed 4×400 m relay team of Piyush Raj, Tahura Khatun, Syed Sabir and Thia Arumugam set a season‑best 3:22.85 but missed the top‑nine cutoff for the final.

India’s delegation of 36 track and field athletes is competing at Oregon’s Hayward Field from August 5‑9.
