Under-19 Boxing Worlds: Aditya Beats Russian to Win India's First Gold

Aditya delivered India's first gold medal at the Under-19 World Boxing Championship, outclassing Russia's Islam Magomedov 4:1 in the men's 55kg final on Tuesday.

The gold is the first for India in this edition of the event, which is being staged in Montenegro. Two bronze medals were already assured for the country.

At Budva, Aditya had earlier overcome Azerbaijan's Nihat Gasimov in the 55kg semifinal. That win made him only the second Indian boxer to reach the final in his category at this championship.

Holding the silver medal from the Asian Under-19 Championships, Aditya maintained his dominance through all three rounds. He won the bout 5:0 on the judges' scorecards.

India's women's challenge also featured Megha Shyokand, who won her 80kg semifinal against Kyrgyzstan's Mirim Chinibekova by referee stop contest and advanced to the final.

Shyokand's final was held on Sunday. After a strong first round, her opponent was counted three times in the second round, prompting the referee to end the contest.

Harshika claimed the first bronze medal for India. She put up a tough fight against USA's Lauren Elmore in the women's 65kg semifinal but lost by a 3:2 decision.

Prachi Tokas took bronze in the women's 80+kg division. Her semifinal against Russia's Samira Itoneva ended in a 1:4 defeat, and she will return home with the medal.

Harshita had earlier reached the women's 65kg semifinal on Saturday evening, beating Ireland's Grace Bailey 5:0 and guaranteeing a medal for India.
