Unbeaten Lead on the Line as India Face New Zealand in Wellington
Wellington is set to host a high-stakes T20 clash on Tuesday as India take on New Zealand in the third match of their five-match series. A win would give India an unbeatable lead in the series, while New Zealand are searching for their first victory.
The Indian side has shown plenty of promise in the two matches played so far. Their second T20 win by four wickets showed the depth of the batting unit. Sanju Samson's explosive innings in the first game remains a highlight, while Abhishek has yet to make the most of good starts. Shreyas Iyer, who leads the side, has looked in fine form across the series.
Tilak Varma's aggressive batting in the second match swung the contest in India's favour. Naman Dhir has been outstanding as a finisher in both games, scoring 31 off 17 balls in the second T20. Nitish Kumar Reddy's unbeaten 26 off 13 balls helped seal the victory. On the bowling front, Arshdeep Singh took two wickets, while Prince Yadav was economical in the same game.
New Zealand have relied heavily on Glenn Phillips, who made an unbeaten 82 in the first T20 and 70 in the second. Bevon Jacobs added 58 in the second match. Tim Seifert, however, has not been able to turn his promising starts into major scores.
The visitors' pace bowling is a concern for the Kiwis, with Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson unlikely to feature in the third T20. Jacob Duffy's 3.5-over spell in the second match cost 41 runs without a wicket. Captain Mitchell Santner has been in excellent form, claiming 4 wickets for 21 runs in four overs in the second match.
In the overall head-to-head record, India lead the rivalry with 21 wins from 33 T20 matches, while New Zealand have 11 victories.
The Henry Stadium pitch is generally considered good for batting, with excellent bounce that brings the ball nicely onto the bat. Fast bowlers, however, get considerable help from the surface, and the new ball often swings early on. Rain is likely in the morning on Tuesday, with cloudy conditions and strong winds forecast, which could benefit the pacers.
