From triple IPL champion to farewell: Mahendra Jayavardhan's MI journey

On October 17, Mumbai Indians confirmed via its official X handle that Mahendra Jayavardhan has resigned as head coach. The announcement was accompanied by a short clip that thanked him for everything he has done for the team.

Jayavardhan’s coaching resume with MI is unparalleled. Appointed for the first time in 2017, he steered the franchise to championships in 2017, 2019 and 2020, securing three of MI’s five IPL trophies. After stepping away in 2022 he took charge of the franchise’s global performance strategy, guiding MI Emirates, MI New York and MI Cape Town in their respective leagues.

He resumed the head‑coach role in 2025, but the side’s performance faltered, finishing fourth in the 2025 IPL and slipping to ninth in the 2026 edition. These outcomes sparked conversations about restructuring the coaching hierarchy.

In his goodbye message, Jayavardhan thanked the Ambani family, the players, the coaching staff and the supporters, calling the experience a priceless period of his career and wishing MI continued success.
