Tilak Verma Says He Plays According to Match Situation

India’s recent white‑ball losses have put the spotlight on the tactics of its middle‑order batsmen. After a double defeat to Ireland in a two‑match T20 series and a 0‑4 whitewash by England, the side also slipped in a three‑match ODI contest. The inability to accelerate the scoring rate has become a focal point for critics.

Tilak Verma, who contributed 74 runs in Ireland and 104 runs against England, has been singled out for his subdued strike‑rate. Despite being the top scorer for India in the Ireland series, his strike‑rate of 81 raised eyebrows among analysts.

In a press briefing ahead of the Zimbabwe T20 series, Verma explained his methodology. “The format demands flexibility,” he said. “If the situation requires me to stay at the crease and build an innings, I will do so. If the team needs quick runs, I will hit out.” He also pointed out that the early loss of wickets in powerplays often forces a shift in strategy, with India losing four wickets by the end of the sixth over in both recent series.

Verma added that the team has absorbed the lessons from the setbacks and is now focusing on executing game plans and regaining confidence. With several players having recent domestic and A‑team experience, the squad feels ready to compete on the bigger stage that the Zimbabwe series presents.
