Tilak and Nitish's Unbeaten 69-Run Stand Sinks New Zealand
Christchurch, October 25: A determined unbeaten partnership between Tilak Varma and Nitish Kumar Reddy carried India to a win over New Zealand in the second T20 at Hagley Oval. The two Hyderabad batters shared a 69-run stand that helped India chase 181 in 19.5 overs.
Both had played in the Hyderabad T20I against West Indies, which ended in defeat after India were unable to chase 248. In Christchurch, they reversed the story on a demanding surface against New Zealand.
Tilak was unbeaten on 51 off 26 balls. Nitish finished on 26 not out from 13 balls. Before them, Naman Dhir made 31 off 17 balls, offering India an important boost. At 70 for 5 after 10.5 overs, the innings needed rescuing. Naman's brisk knock lifted the scoring rate, and Tilak and Nitish then took control and finished the match.
In a clip shared by the BCCI, Nitish began by saying, "Friends, today I have the Player of the Match with me." Tilak quickly responded, "And today I have the Game Changer of the Match with me." They went on to discuss the partnership that proved decisive.
Nitish wanted to know how Tilak had felt out in the middle. Tilak said it had felt good for him too. He recalled that in Hyderabad, the two Telugu players had been hoping to stay until the end and win the game. He added that God always has the right time for everything. Players should trust their process, work hard, and the right things will happen at the right time.
The second T20 was played on the same pitch as the first, which appeared quite broken up. The ball gripped, and playing shots was difficult. The big boundaries also made sixes hard to find.
Tilak said the tough conditions and large ground made the surface challenging. The pitch was slow, and the bouncers were coming fast, so clearing the rope was not easy. He pointed out that the first game had offered more chances to hit sixes, whereas this contest required clever cricket. The team concentrated on fitness and fast running for ones and twos, and it took sixes whenever it could.
Nitish praised Tilak's speed between the wickets and said Tilak had come in when Naman was attacking freely. Tilak took no risks and kept giving Naman the strike.
Tilak admitted he had wanted to play bigger shots during Naman's innings. However, he had promised head coach Gautam Gambhir and Sitanshu Kotak that he would take the game deeper in coming matches. He said his approach in the previous game had been somewhat defensive. This time, he stayed calm, played sensibly against spin, and took the innings deep. He concluded that the result that followed was God's plan.
