Teenage Chinese Surfer Qualifies for Paris 2024 Olympics After Asian Games Success
Seventeen‑year‑old Yang Siki of China not only earned a silver medal in the women’s shortboard at the 2026 Asian Games, but also secured her place at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The Nagoya competition saw Yang start with two strong rides, scoring 4.00 and 3.57, which gave her an early advantage over Japan’s Mirai Ikeda. Ikeda’s persistence on smaller waves eventually shifted the momentum, and she finished with a gold‑winning 11.64 to Yang’s 7.57.
Yang reflected on her performance, highlighting a newfound maturity and consistency that set her apart from earlier contests. She remained composed despite falling behind and avoided the temptation to chase a high‑risk wave that could jeopardize her run. The narrow miss of gold left her emotional, as she expressed disappointment over the lack of a clean, decisive wave.
Her Olympic qualification marks a historic first for Chinese surfing, positioning her as a trailblazer for the sport in her country. In the men’s shortboard final, Japan’s Kanoa Igarashi captured gold, Indonesia’s I Made Pazar Ariyana took silver, and the Philippines earned bronze through Jayward Elsiso. The Nagoya Games also debuted surfing as an official Asian Games discipline, with both men’s and women’s shortboard events serving as qualifiers for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
