Billionaire Tech Entrepreneur Targets Full or Half Ownership of Renegades
Melbourne’s BBL side, the Renegades, have entered the first stage of a sale that could see the club shift from public to private ownership. Cricket Australia has signed off on the league’s privatisation, and Cricket Victoria, together with the Rain Group consultancy, are now vetting prospective buyers.
Sanjay Govil, a Silicon Valley‑based tech investor, is positioning himself as a serious contender. Govil already controls 50 percent of the Welsh Fire and co‑owns the Washington Freedom, both part of the Major League Cricket structure in the United States. He told reporters he is "on the radar" for the Renegades and is evaluating how much he can commit without entering a price‑driven bidding war.
In addition to Melbourne, Govil expressed interest in the Hobart Hurricanes, highlighting the possibility of funding a new stadium to give the club state‑of‑the‑art facilities. He argued that the Hurricanes are a "winning team" where strategic input could generate outsized returns.
Govil stressed that his involvement goes beyond capital; he wants to bring an active management style, ensuring at least a 50 percent (or full) stake that gives him decision‑making power. He believes sports cannot be replaced by AI and that preserving local culture is essential for long‑term success.
For Govil, the BBL is the second‑largest T20 league globally, and securing a stake would cement his presence in the premier cricket markets of Australia, the United States, and beyond.
