Team India Eyes 2-0 Lead in Hagley Oval T20 Clash with New Zealand

Christchurch, October 24: India will take on New Zealand in the second T20 of the series on Saturday, with the match starting at 12:30 PM IST. The game will be played at Hagley Oval, the same ground where the first T20 produced a flood of runs and ended with India winning by four wickets. Vaibhav Suryavanshi may get a chance to play.

Vaibhav has been a long-term bench player, waiting for an opportunity in the playing eleven. He was not part of the West Indies series, which comprised five matches, and was also left out of the first T20 against New Zealand. The absence of Ishan Kishan due to injury has, to a considerable extent, paved the way for Vaibhav's return to the side.

BCCI confirmed on Friday through its social media page that Ishan Kishan was injured and would not take part in the second T20. With Ishan ruled out, Vaibhav Suryavanshi has become the most watched name. As a batter, he is the leading contender for a place in the playing eleven, and there is a strong likelihood he will be given the chance.

The inclusion of Vaibhav would directly affect Sanju Samson's position in the batting order. For Vaibhav to come in, Samson may have to vacate his opening role and bat at number three. This is considered the most realistic way to accommodate Vaibhav. Samson has earlier batted at number three for India and in the IPL. If this plan is applied, Abhishek and Vaibhav could open the innings, with Samson batting at number three.

Vaibhav made his T20 international debut against England on July 4, 2026. He has played eight matches and eight innings, scoring 246 runs and hitting two half-centuries. His highest score stands at 81. He also won the Player of the Tournament award in the T20 series against Zimbabwe.

If Vaibhav takes the field in the second T20, cricket lovers around the world will once again focus on his batting. Team India, meanwhile, will go into the match with the aim of winning it and taking a 2-0 lead in the series.
