Team India Script T20I History with Biggest Successful Chase
Team India rewrote the record books in Christchurch on Wednesday, defeating New Zealand by four wickets in the first T20 International played at Hagley Oval.
The Indian batting unit overhauled a daunting target of 226 runs, reaching the mark in 19.4 overs while losing six wickets. It is the largest successful run chase in India's T20 International history.
The team's previous highest chase had come against Australia in 2023, when they reached 209. This year, India also chased down 209 against New Zealand. The current effort ranks as the second-best successful chase by any team against New Zealand in T20 cricket.
The result marked New Zealand's seventh defeat in their last eight T20 Internationals against India.
Sanju Samson set the tone with a fluent 67 from 33 deliveries. Shreyas Iyer, who captained the side, followed with 42 runs off 28 balls.
Naman Dhir was the hero of the chase, unleashing a flurry of big shots to finish unbeaten on 42 from 15 balls. His innings was the highest by an Indian batter batting at number seven or lower in a successful T20I chase, eclipsing Irfan Pathan's unbeaten 33 off 16 balls against Sri Lanka in 2009.
New Zealand's total was built around Glenn Phillips, who blasted 82 from 40 balls. Finn Allen added 45 off 24 deliveries, Bevon Jacobs made 31 off 16, Daryl Mitchell scored 28 off 19, and Tim Seifert chipped in with 24 off 17 balls.
Despite a spirited batting display from the hosts, India's clinical chase secured a memorable opening win in the series.
