Tanvi Patra Breaks Barriers at Youth Olympic Games in Dakar
Breaking through years of male dominance in Indian Youth Olympic badminton, Tanvi Patra has qualified for the women’s singles semi-finals. Her achievement in Dakar, Senegal, marks a historic milestone for the nation in the sport.
Securing her place in the last four required a decisive performance against Thailand’s Kakarnip Kunkao. Facing the seventh-seeded Thai player, Tanvi controlled the quarter-final match, which lasted 39 minutes. She capitalized on her opportunities to win 21-17 and 21-13, leaving the crowd and team celebration.
The quarter-final run places Tanvi in rare company. Before her breakthrough, Indian badminton representation at the Youth Olympics had only seen three athletes reach the semi-finals. H.S. Prannoy earned silver in Singapore 2010, and Lakshya Sen mirrored that success in Buenos Aires 2018. Aditya Joshi reached the same stage in 2014 but missed out on a podium finish.
Now, Tanvi carries the torch for Indian women badminton at this level. A win in the semi-final will make her the first Indian female medalist in Youth Olympic badminton. Even a semi-final exit will grant her a chance to play for bronze, giving her two matches left to chase glory.
Her immediate hurdle is Japan’s Yuzuna Watanabe. The Japanese shuttler previously handed Tanvi a tough defeat at the 2024 Pathum Thani Junior International Series, winning 21-14 and 21-10. Tanvi will need to adjust her tactics to overcome her rivals.
The Dakar Games badminton tournament featured a rigorous pathway for the 32 athletes in each singles category. The event began with a group stage, where players were distributed across eight pools of four. After each participant faced the other three in their pool, the group winners advanced. From there, the tournament shifted to a knockout format, moving through quarter-finals and semi-finals. All medal matches will wrap up on November 5.
