The Supreme Court of India has sent a notice to pace bowler Mohammad Shami following a plea by his wife Hasin Jahan to shift their contentious domestic dispute case from Kolkata to Delhi. This move comes amid prolonged litigation over allegations of abuse and financial support.
Explaining her request, Hasin stated she relocated to the national capital to secure superior schooling for their young daughter, rendering frequent trips to Kolkata unfeasible. She pointed out Shami’s professional mobility across India and his familial ties in Uttar Pradesh, which favor Delhi as a neutral and accessible venue.
Earlier, Hasin had approached the top court to hike her maintenance claim from Rs 4 lakhs to Rs 10 lakhs monthly. Notices were issued then to Shami and state authorities, keeping the matter alive.
Their union in 2014 bore fruit with a daughter’s birth in 2015, but cracks appeared by 2018. Hasin leveled serious charges including cruelty, attempt to murder, rape, and infidelity against Shami, filing at Jadavpur under multiple IPC provisions and seeking sustenance under CrPC 125.
Shami, undeterred, shone in domestic cricket lately, bagging nine wickets in a Ranji match. The Supreme Court’s intervention could streamline proceedings, offering a fresh chapter in this saga that has gripped cricket fans and legal observers alike.
