Sri Lanka Stun England in Record Chase; Brook Reflects on Defeat

Sri Lanka produced one of the greatest chases in one-day international history to defeat England in a thrilling tri-series match in Pakistan on Thursday. England captain Harry Brook, whose team lost the contest, admitted afterward that his side had been outplayed.

Brook said the match was a fine advertisement for the format and that both teams had competed hard. He believed Sri Lanka had been the stronger side and that England's bowling had not been good enough to contain them. He added that the team had not fully matched the intensity required against an opponent in such form.

The England captain said the group would need to return to the drawing board. He pointed out that the players understood their mistakes and that the bowling had been the primary weakness. With a few games still left in the series, Brook insisted the team could still book a place in the final if it kept things simple and backed each other.

England's innings was built around a record effort from Brook, who struck 202 runs from 116 balls with 21 fours and 10 sixes. The knock was the quickest double century in ODI cricket. Joe Root added 69 from 66 balls, and Will Jacks finished unbeaten on 66 from 30 deliveries, as England reached 429 for 4 in 50 overs.

Sri Lanka replied with 430 for 8 in 49.5 overs. Avishka Fernando hit 97 from 83 balls, and Pavan Rathnayake, batting at number four, scored 130 from 106 balls and was named Player of the Match. Dasun Shanaka contributed 97 from 50 balls. Janith Liyanage remained unbeaten on 61 from 27 deliveries to complete the historic victory.

The result is the second-highest successful chase in ODI history and the largest Sri Lanka has ever achieved. It has drawn attention from cricket fans across the globe and is likely to be remembered as one of the most astonishing matches of the year.
