Sports Goods Scheme Aims to Make India a Global Hub
India is taking a decisive step to become a global centre for sports goods design, development and manufacturing. The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Khelo India Sports Goods Manufacturing Scheme for the period 2026 to 2033-34, with a total financial outlay of Rs 1,856.67 crore.
Announced in the Union Budget 2026-27, the scheme seeks to boost investment, manufacturing, innovation and exports. It also aims to raise India's standing in global sports goods supply chains and strengthen the country's domestic production base.
The scheme offers targeted assistance for investment, technology adoption, research and innovation, skill development, quality certification and market development. Together, these elements are expected to build a more competitive and self-reliant industry.
At the heart of the plan are Sports Goods Manufacturing Zones, or SGMZs. These zones will bring together manufacturers, suppliers, testing facilities, design and prototyping centres, and ancillary enterprises at one location, creating an integrated industrial ecosystem. They will be developed in coordination with the BHAVYA scheme and NICDC industrial parks.
The Anchor Investment Support component will encourage prominent domestic and global manufacturers, brands and retail chains to establish production units in these zones, while also supporting the growth of suppliers. The Turnover Linked Support component complements this by promoting greater output and capacity expansion. The combined investment under these measures is Rs 1,130 crore.
The scheme also prioritises micro, small and medium enterprises. Existing manufacturing clusters will be strengthened through shared facilities and infrastructure.
For research, the government plans to help establish Centres of Excellence at leading academic and research institutions, with coordination through the Anusandhan National Research Foundation. Startups will receive dedicated support under the Startup India framework.
The scheme also backs the export push under the Niryat Sanvardhan Mission and complements programmes such as Khelo India and Fit India. It is expected to generate jobs, expand exports and support India's aspirations as an emerging sporting nation.
