South Africa’s women learn from semi‑final defeat, eye future success
The South African women’s cricket team’s 2026 T20 World Cup journey concluded on July 3 after a semi‑final loss to England at The Oval. Coach Mandla Mashimbi used the occasion to stress the importance of learning from setbacks.
“The defeat teaches us where we need to improve,” Mashimbi said, adding that the team will revisit strategies and strengthen its overall game plan. He highlighted that the players now have a clear picture of their deficiencies and are committed to addressing them through rigorous training.
Performance highlights from the tournament featured Tanjamin Britz, who recorded 225 runs and finished as the team’s top scorer, while Marizen Cap and Shabnim Ismail each secured eight wickets over six matches. Mashimbi affirmed Ismail’s continued fitness and readiness to contribute for many seasons ahead.
Regarding the criticism of a perceived over‑dependence on the new ball, the coach clarified that the issue lay in a lack of variety among the bowlers. He called for increased support for spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba and a more diverse bowling arsenal to keep opponents guessing. Mashimbi concluded that the side will enter the next ICC competitions with a stronger, more adaptable unit.
