South Africa Post 387, Leave Australia Chasing 288 in Cape Town
Cape Town, October 30: South Africa posted 387 all out in their second innings, setting Australia a target of 288 to win the third Test at Newlands. The day's play ended with the hosts' innings complete.
South Africa's second innings started slowly. Aiden Markram was out for one, and David Bedingham scored 11 before departing. Temba Bavuma and Marques Ackermann put on 64 runs for the third wicket, but Bavuma fell for 35 after getting a good start.
Ackermann scored 62 runs off 80 balls, with eight fours. Matthew Breetzke made 43. When South Africa were 181 for 5, Markram and Wiaan Mulder rebuilt the innings with a 154-run stand for the sixth wicket, which came off 318 balls.
The partnership was anchored by centuries from Ryan Rickelton and Mulder. Rickelton made 101 with 12 fours. Mulder made 115 from 221 balls, including 10 fours and four sixes.
The 387-run total is South Africa's third-highest at Cape Town's Newlands ground. The team lost its final six wickets for 53 runs.
Mitchell Starc took three wickets for Australia. Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon each claimed two, while Josh Hazlewood took one.
A chase of 280-plus has been completed at Newlands only once before, when Australia successfully pursued 331 in 2002.
