The Simdega district of Jharkhand has earned a reputation as the cradle of Indian hockey talent. From early pioneers like Jaipal Singh Munda, whose 1928 Olympic triumph inspired local youth, to contemporary stars such as former captain Sumrai Tete, the region’s contribution is unmatched.
Generations of players – Michael Kindo, Silveni Dung Dung, Manoj Topno, Ajit Lakra, Bimal Lakra, Birendra Lakra, Asunta Lakra – have risen from Simdega’s village fields, often practising on makeshift pitches in farms and schoolyards.
