Shanghai Masters: Ruud and Auger‑Aliassime Set for Pre‑Quarterfinal Clash

The Shanghai Masters has set up a compelling pre‑quarterfinal showdown as Canada’s top two seeds, Casper Ruud and Felix Auger‑Aliassime, both booked tickets to the round of 16 on Monday.

Ruud, the world No.20, overcame American Learner TN 6‑4, 7‑6(3) in a match that lasted 1 hour 42 minutes. Ruud’s serving dominance was evident with 13 aces and an 89% first‑serve point conversion, while he broke TN’s serve at a pivotal juncture in the first set and preserved his own service games throughout.

On the opposite side of the draw, fourth‑seed Auger‑Aliassime beat Spain’s Pablo Careno Busta 6‑3, 4‑6, 6‑1. His aggressive play at the net earned him 14 of 18 net points, and his first‑serve points won stood at 80%. Busta struggled, managing only a 63% first‑serve conversion and minimal success at the net.

The Canadians have met eight times before, with Ruud ahead 5‑3 overall. However, Auger‑Aliassime has won the last four meetings, including a memorable Olympic quarterfinal win. Their rivalry intensified after the Monte‑Carlo Masters 1000 event, where Ruud’s retirement handed Auger‑Aliassime a straight‑set victory.

The forthcoming match will not only decide who advances to the quarterfinals but also add another chapter to a rivalry that has become a focal point of the ATP tour this season.
