Shanghai Masters day two: Cobolli upset, Shelton celebrates birthday

Day two of the Shanghai Masters offered several surprises. World No. 7 Fabio Cobolli was upset by 83‑ranked Adrian Mannarino, who won 1-6, 6-4, 3-6, ending the Italian’s run after a similar early‑round loss in Beijing.

Meanwhile, American Ben Shelton, fresh from his US Open final loss to Zverev, turned 24 by beating Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 7-6(6). Shelton, who captured the Canada Masters earlier this season, now eyes a second Masters 1000 title.

Japanese qualifier Re Sakamoto also made headlines, surprising former finalist Andre Rublev 6-4, 6-4 on Court 3. Sakamoto broke Rublev’s serve twice and saved both break points, securing his place in the round of 32.
