Senegal Officially Opens Youth Olympic Games With Grand Ceremony

Dakar, November 1: The Youth Olympic Games 2026 have been officially inaugurated in Senegal with a dazzling opening ceremony in the capital, Dakar. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye declared the Games open, kicking off a multi-sport event that carries special significance for the continent.

This is the first Olympic event ever staged in Africa. Hundreds of young athletes, representing nations from across the globe, paraded through the Stade Abdoulaye Wade during the ceremony.

The celebration drew on Senegal's cherished tradition of Teranga, or hospitality. The show followed a path linking Africa's history, its present and its future. Three symbolic characters, Alkebulan, Keb and Sito, anchored the performance, which highlighted how cultural heritage passes from generation to generation and how young people are shaping the continent's path forward.

International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry lauded the historic and symbolic evening. “This is the Africa that makes me so proud, and I am excited for the world to experience it. Standing here tonight, I feel enormous pride. As a proud Zimbabwean and an African woman, I am especially proud that our continent is welcoming the Olympic Movement for the first time.”

Reflecting on her own journey, Coventry said, “Sport opened many doors for me. It gave me the confidence to trust myself and to dream big. That is what I wish for every one of you during these Games.”

Speaking directly to the athletes, she said, “I hope these Games will give you confidence to believe in yourselves and to dream big. Put everything you have into it.”

The Games are scheduled from October 31 to November 13 in Dakar, Saly and Diamniadio. A total of 2,655 young athletes from 205 delegations have arrived to compete in 25 sports.

India is represented by a 17-member squad, made up of 11 women and six men, competing across 11 sports.

India has earned 23 medals in the previous three Youth Olympic Games, comprising three gold, 16 silver and four bronze. Indian athletes also secured four additional medals in mixed-NOC events, in which athletes from different National Olympic Committees competed together. These medals do not feature in India's official medal tally.

The country's most successful Youth Olympic campaign remains Buenos Aires 2018, where it collected 13 medals, including three gold, nine silver and one bronze.
