Seema Kaliraman’s Focus on Performance Pays Off with CWG Bronze

Glasgow, 31 July – On the eighth day of the Commonwealth Games 2026, Seema Kaliraman turned heads by securing a bronze medal in the women's discus throw with a best effort of 58.65 metres.

The athlete emphasized that her primary aim was to execute a flawless performance rather than chase a medal. “The happiness of standing on the podium is beyond description,” Kaliraman told reporters. “During the throw I was completely present, without any secondary thoughts. Since I began to truly enjoy my discipline, my throws have progressively improved. I never set out to win a medal or even predict the distance I would achieve. My intention was simply to give my absolute best.”

Kaliraman competed away from her child, a fact she said made her miss home deeply. The mention of her little one's name often brings an emotional response, she admitted.

Her husband, Ravinder, who also doubles as her personal coach, traveled with her to Scotland. Recalling the 2025 Asian Championships, Kaliraman explained that his absence then had been a setback. “His presence now has boosted my confidence enormously. He never pressured me about medals; his only advice was to have fun and strive for my personal best.”

The discus thrower appealed to the government for comprehensive assistance to athletes, citing the array of mental, financial and logistical challenges faced before any medal is won. Her bronze adds to India’s medal haul and underscores the importance of sustained support for sports talent.
