Sandeep Sets World Record, India Reaches 100th Medal in Japan

A record-breaking performance by Sandeep has helped India reach a historic milestone at the Asian Para Games 2026. The Indian contingent reached 100 medals on the fifth day of the Games, held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

Sandeep won gold in the men's 400m T64 event and set a new world record of 42.28 seconds. Making his debut at the Asian Para Games, he secured India's 100th medal with the victory. Teammate Ajay Kumar won bronze in the same event.

Reacting to the achievements, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya congratulated the medal winners on social media. He described the 100-medal landmark as a memorable moment for India.

The day began with a strong display across several disciplines. In para table tennis, Jehan Dorab Madan and Shubham Wadhwa won India's first-ever bronze in the men's doubles MD4 category at the Asian Para Games.

In badminton, Nitesh Kumar and Pramod Bhagat contested the men's singles SL3 gold medal match, and the final turned into an all-India showdown. Nitesh Kumar, the current Paralympic champion, won gold, and Pramod Bhagat, the current World champion, took silver.

Archery also contributed to the day's success. Harvinder Singh and Vijay Sunda won gold in the men's recurve doubles, while Bhavna and Pooja earned silver in the women's recurve doubles.

Athletics added to India's medal count with Pramod's silver in the men's 1500m T46 race. Thulasimathi Murugesan also won silver in the women's singles SU5 badminton event.

The Minister extended his congratulations to every medal winner, recognising the efforts that helped India surpass the 100-medal mark on Friday.
